Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Gets Theatrical And Netflix Dates

Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein, starring Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth and Jacob Elordi, is coming to theaters before it makes its debut on Netflix later this fall.

Based on Mary Shelley’s classic novel, Frankenstein stars Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, while Mia Goth plays Victor’s fiancée, Elizabeth Lavenza, and Elordi plays Frankenstein’s Monster. The film also stars Christoph Waltz, Ralph Ineson, Charles Dance, Burn Gorman, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery and Charles Dance.

The first trailer for Frankenstein was revealed at Netflix’s TUDUM event on May 31 and only teased that the film was coming in November.

On Monday, however, Netflix TUDUM announced that Frankenstein will be released in select theaters on Oct. 17 and “lurches onto Netflix on Nov. 7.”

The number of theaters Frankenstein will be playing in is yet to be announced. The “select” theaters announcement means that the film will only play in limited release, in all likelihood to qualify for awards season and events like the Oscars, Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards and all of the guild awards.

The stop-motion animated film Pinocchio — del Toro’s last film for Netflix— followed a similar pattern by opening in select theaters before its Netflix debut. The film went on to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2023.

‘Frankenstein’ Has Long Been A Passion Project For Guillermo Del Toro

Guillermo del Toro, who unveiled the first trailer for Frankenstein at Netflix TUDUM in May, said at the event that making the film fulfilled a lifelong dream.

“I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me a religious state,” del Toro said at TUDUM.

“Monsters have become my personal belief system. There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films — Cronos, Blade, Hellboy, big time on Pinocchio and a long, long, et cetera,” the filmmaker added. “Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation [and] father and son has consumed my stories again and again. I wanted to make this film before even I had a camera and I’ve been actively pursuing it now for 25 years.”

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein opens in select theaters on Oct. 17 before debuting on Netflix on Nov. 7.
