Destiny 2 is gearing up for the release of the final expansion in its Light and Darkness saga, The Final Shape, even as the game will continue on in some form or another after that. Now, we have our final launch trailer for The Final Shape, joining a number of other quite good trailers for the expansion so far. This one? It’s downright shocking.
What new stuff do we see? What do we learn? Well, we can extract a bit, and you can check out the trailer for yourself below:
- That was… a lot. First, it’s a purely CG trailer, indicating there are going to be a lot of fully rendered cutscenes in The Final Shape, not just in-engine stuff, still-animation sequences or lore pages. These are pricey, and there appear to be a lot of them.
- The Witness is not just chilling inside The Traveler, he is actively cubing earth and turning everything into the sliced-up Final Shape of “stillness.” I mean, I presume defeating him would un-cube Earth and all its apples and children, but yeah things are not going great.
- We see the arrival of the famed shrouded figures from the earliest days of the game, a concept that seemed like it may had been forgotten, but it does have some sort of ghostly role to play this time around.
- That role? That would appear to be the corruption of Commander Zavala, previously thought to be the most uncorruptible member of the Vanguard. We know he has suffered great loss in the form of his son, Hakim, who was killed by Fallen. His mother, Safiyah, survived, but they separated and soon she was lost due to his immortality, and her lack of it. Now, perhaps he wants them back? In any case, the idea of a Darkness-corrupted Zavala is terrifying.
- We saw Crow fight in the Wish finale cutscene, going up against Cayde, missing every shot. But now? He’s fully channeling Cayde with a Golden Gun, indicating he’s going to be far more involved in The Final Shape past just getting us there.
- The core focus is certainly the Vanguard, however. We don’t see all that much new from Cayde, but we have the Zavala thing, and Ikora gets shot at one point (I’m sure she’s fine).
It’s…a pretty insane trailer, even by Destiny standards where their trailer teams are always on point. This is a very, very rare all-CG trailer, and a long one, and again it really indicates there’s going to be a lot of this level of quality in the release itself. I cannot wait.
