How AI Will Spur The Democratization Of Technology In 2024

Ed Macosky, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Boomi, a leading provider of cloud-based integration platform as a service (iPaaS).

With the artificial intelligence market set to reach nearly $2 trillion by 2030, it’s no secret that the explosion of AI has sparked a remarkable technological shift. Companies looking to participate in the AI race are now scrambling to take advantage of AI systems and incorporate the technology into products and workflows.

However, enterprises face a twofold challenge: adequately integrating AI technology into business processes while ensuring they stay competitive in the market. The AI race has prompted even greater innovation opportunities and potential to drive technological democratization across organizations for both technical and non-technical staff—particularly as enterprises face a scarcity of IT talent.

As AI continues to evolve in the year ahead, businesses must begin fostering a resilient, future-proof foundation to empower teams to take full advantage of AI’s capabilities. This will, in turn, promote enhanced organizational success, competitiveness and creativity in the long run.

Embracing AI To Fuel Collaboration

AI’s impact has evolved notably over the past year and will only continue to accelerate. For enterprises, AI has helped foster collaboration by streamlining existing processes. This has freed up teams and resources to generate better business results and increase business competitiveness. Moreover, AI can act as both a traditional IT assistant and a resource to businesses as they develop a product from ideation to deployment.

Even now, teams are proactively incorporating AI copilots and other technology into workflows and DevOps processes, integrating AI technologies into their code review and writing practices. In this way, the integration of AI is bringing teams—especially software engineering teams—closer together as they identify ways to enhance their overall approach and performance. AI’s ability to promote collaboration benefits enterprises by helping engineering teams put their heads together to think more innovatively about how they can streamline certain processes within their organizations, including use for pilots, proof of concepts (POCs) and testing.

While the work of developer and engineering teams has previously been largely confined to the backend, IT leaders are stepping even further into roles as critical advisors, being more involved in business discussions and company-wide tech trainings as opposed to simply meeting technology needs.

With this increased cross-organizational involvement and collaboration, companies that employ AI for automation, prototyping and testing will need to align on AI strategies for both technical and non-technical staff. This initiative will empower non-developers to innovate more frequently and, as a result, drastically decrease the time required for new project developments. With resilient AI frameworks, non-technical employees will acquire the tools needed to take on tasks typically reserved for technical staff, encouraging the development of creative approaches to generate impactful business results.

Integrating AI Into Business Operations

It’s clear that integrating AI into business processes will drive technological democratization across levels as enterprises grapple with a limited supply of IT talent. However, not many business leaders are confident about how to take that first step. Considering the enduring relevance of AI, organizations must focus on establishing a pragmatic framework to harness AI’s advantages over the long term. Developing this foundation must ultimately be geared toward enhancing business value by streamlining processes, creating innovative products and services and providing compelling user experiences.

While easy-to-use solutions such as low-code technologies have emerged as resources to solve the IT skills gap, an intentional engagement with AI will enable both technical and non-technical staff to build and deploy initiatives while addressing resource scarcity. The resource investment needed for infrastructure maintenance and technical training is usually high, which can impede a business’ ability to adapt quickly and stay ahead of the competition.

These resource hurdles can look especially pronounced during challenging macroeconomic climates and an increasingly competitive landscape. The ability to swiftly and effectively reskill non-technical staff is essential to build organizational resilience. In turn, deliberately implemented AI automation will help businesses reduce the resources needed for IT maintenance, as well as the amount of technical expertise required to build and develop software.

AI In 2024 And Beyond

AI has fundamentally transformed the business landscape by offering a powerful tool to address myriad business functions, and stakeholders have a renewed challenge to ascertain how to effectively use AI to keep up alongside their competitors’ same efforts.

Ultimately, attempts to integrate AI must serve a broader, strategic purpose to drive the competitive outcomes that business leaders desire. The enthusiasm around AI and its rapid technological progression has prompted leaders to move quickly toward implementing AI solutions into their business processes. But despite swift and cutting-edge progress, it is critical for businesses to approach the implementation of AI automation with deliberateness to ensure the longevity of their digital transformation efforts.

Though it is tempting to see all progress as good progress, practical frameworks that promote steady, effective engagement with AI are what will fortify the durability of an enterprise’s AI integration strategy in the long run. A future-proof approach, with consideration for how AI will continue to change and mature, is what will unlock transformational business outcomes in the years ahead.

As AI continues to take center stage, enterprises must not only engage with AI but do so promptly. As a result, businesses will empower their teams to collaborate more effectively, and non-technical staff who lack an extensive IT background will unlock the ability to take on more technical tasks with low-code options. The democratization of technology for enterprises in 2024 and beyond, fueled by AI, presents an exciting future full of unleashed innovation, creativity and imagination.
