How Castor Oil Innovation Is Redefining Everyday Products

Castor oil has long been associated with traditional beauty and wellness, but innovators are now harnessing it to engineer the next generation of sustainable products. Most of the global production of castor seed is concentrated in India, where the crop thrives in semi-arid regions with minimal water, fertilizer, or pesticide inputs. Seeing that castor plants grow on marginal land and do not compete with food crops, they offer a low-impact, renewable resource that can generate jobs and strengthen rural economies. Increasingly, castor oil is being transformed into high-performance fibers and biopolymers, proving that old-world remedies can fuel new-world innovation.

Castor Oil Bristles and Circular Design Power SURI’s Innovation

In the personal care sector, London-based SURI (short for Sustainable Rituals) is reimagining the electric toothbrush. The company recently launched the SURI 2.0, which retains its minimalist aluminum handle and recyclable plant-based brush heads while introducing upgraded features such as an advanced sonic motor, a gentle pressure sensor, and a redesigned UV-C travel case. According to Salus Research clinical trials, the toothbrush improves gum health and removes twice as much plaque compared to a manual brush.

SURI’s approach is grounded in circularity. Its brush heads use PLA (a polymer derived from renewable resources like corn or sugarcane) and castor oil based bristles. Through a free mail-back scheme, customers return used heads in compostable mailers. More than half a ton has already been collected, with materials shredded and repurposed into outdoor furniture or reused in 3D printing prototypes. Currently, 35% of customers participate in the program, and SURI aims to increase that rate to 65%.

As a certified B Corp, SURI goes beyond product design by embedding sustainability across its supply chain and operations. The company tracks emissions transparently, prioritizes reduction over offsetting, and ensures compliance with recycling and producer responsibility schemes in every market. With their integration of customer engagement with lifecycle thinking, SURI demonstrates how sustainable design can also drive brand loyalty and rapid growth.

Reinventing Tights With Castor Oil

One of the most intriguing applications of castor oil is in fashion. UK-based SNAG, a female-owned and size-inclusive brand, is rewriting the script for hosiery. The company has launched tights made from castor oil–derived fibers that combine sustainability with superior performance. Unlike conventional nylon, these fibers are biodegradable under certain conditions, yet remain durable, silky-soft.

SNAG’s innovation is not just about material science but is also rooted in access. The brand offers sizes from US 0 to 32, with options tailored for heights up to 6’5” and engineered for body shape, with high-rise waistbands that stay put, reinforced toes, built-in anti-chafing bands, and sensory-friendly flat seams. In an industry notorious for poor fit and lack of inclusivity, SNAG proves that sustainable products can also deliver comfort, durability, and representation.

From tights to toothbrushes, these brands exemplify how renewable resources and circular systems can transform everyday essentials. SNAG and SURI are not only addressing environmental challenges but also redefining consumer expectations of comfort, inclusivity, and performance.
