How Friendships Change With Age

How often do people change their friends as they get older? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Lawrence Kosick, President and Co-Founder of GetSetUp, on Quora:

The dynamics of friendships can shift throughout different stages of life, and it is not uncommon for people to experience changes in their circle of friends as they get older. While the frequency of friend changes varies from person to person, several factors contribute to these shifts. Some factors you can prepare for, and others may happen unexpectedly, but knowing where they are and where to go to make new friends can be a great asset since, as humans, we thrive in communities!

Here are some factors that impact friendships:

  1. Life transitions: As individuals age, they often go through significant life transitions such as retirement, relocation, or changes in family dynamics. These transitions can result in shifts in social circles, as people may gravitate towards new communities or develop friendships with individuals who share similar experiences.
  2. Personal growth and evolving interests: Throughout life, individuals grow and evolve, and their interests and priorities may change. As people pursue new hobbies, engage in different activities, or develop new passions, they may naturally gravitate towards individuals who share their newfound interests. This can lead to the formation of new friendships, while some older friendships may gradually fade.
  3. Geographical distance: With age, people may become more geographically dispersed due to work opportunities, family commitments, or personal choices. Physical distance can impact the frequency of interactions and make it more challenging to maintain close friendships. While technology has made it easier to stay connected, proximity plays a role in the frequency of in-person interactions. For friendships that may be physically distant, it is very important to put in extra effort to maintain the friendship in spite of distance, be it with annual visits, calls, or letters.
  4. Life circumstances: Life circumstances, such as health conditions or caregiving responsibilities, can influence the social dynamics of older adults. These factors may require individuals to prioritize their time and energy differently, which can impact the frequency of social interactions and the ability to maintain friendships.
  5. Social support networks: Older adults often rely on social support networks to maintain their overall well-being. These networks may include family members, close friends, and community organizations. As people age, their social circles may naturally shift to include individuals who provide essential support and companionship during this phase of life.

It is important to note that while some friendships may change or evolve, many individuals maintain lifelong friendships that withstand the test of time. These enduring friendships often provide a sense of stability and continuity in people’s lives.

At GetSetUp, we recognize the importance of social connections and the role they play in the well-being of older adults and people of all ages. Our platform provides opportunities for older individuals to connect with peers, build new friendships, and engage in meaningful discussions. Through interactive classes and social events, our community fosters a supportive environment for older adults to develop and maintain connections throughout their lives.

No matter a person’s age, there are always ways to get out there and meet new people. If you are in the market for some new friends, it’s a great idea to be prepared to extend the olive branch and invite others to lunch, a walk, or an activity. It may take a couple of times, but a good rule of thumb is to try three times, and if the offer isn’t accepted, move on to someone else. If you aren’t sure where to go to make friends, there are lots of great opportunities by joining clubs or social circles, through sports or classes that interest you, volunteering, or traveling. These communities can be found locally and virtually to help meet your most pressing needs. Making new friends should be a lifelong endeavor as friendships help us learn and expand our perceptions, so there’s never been a better time to get started – give an old friend a call to rekindle a friendship or join a group to find your next new friend.
