In the past, I’ve written about the awesomeness of year-to-year saves in MLB The Show.
I’ve also written about the pain that followed the elimination of the feature in 2021 and the longing for its return. Unfortunately, it would be a major surprise to see Y2Y saves back in MLB The Show 24 or in any other iteration of the game anytime soon.
Based on conversations I’ve had with people within the industry, the feature is difficult to maintain and can create instability in other parts of the game. That difficulty is to be behind its removal three years ago.
According to multiple people with expert knowledge of the development of an annual sports video game title, this is one of the reasons no other franchise has attempted to emulate what The Show did from 2015 through 2021.
Most dev teams will err on the side of caution regarding auxiliary features like Y2Y saves, which appears to be where we are with this one.
On a more positive note, I’m told the game looks excellent visually and that it’s close to being ready for an unveiling. All indications are that it will release in late March as has been the case in recent years.
The Show has consistently produced the most accurate representation of the sport it emulates, and all indications point to that trend continuing in 2024. The central questions will be around any franchise mode improvements, which appear to be on the way, at least from an under-the-hood perspective, and Diamond Dynasty refinement.
Lastly, The Show community is hungry for additional layers to be added to Road to the Show. If those three boxes are checked, it’ll make it a little easier to accept the absence of Y2Y saves.
