The genuinely excellent Macross Plus: Movie Edition is getting a theatrical screening in New York later this month, with an introduction by Shinichiro Watanabe.
The showing of the movie will be on November 22, and you can pre-order tickets here. Thanks to LeSean Thomas, who’s set up a bunch of really great programming for this, there will also be an introduction from director Shinichiro Watanabe.
Back when I interviewed Watanabe, he explained that he thought that this was very much a series and movie by Shoji Kawamori, the original creator of Macross. However, it’s hard to ignore Watanabe’s contribution to this film, especially as it contains the Legendary Five Seconds of Animation among many other things.
Macross Plus originally started out as a four-part OVA series and was later adapted into a movie with additional footage. Like the series, it also featured wonderful music by Yoko Kanno.
Somewhat of a standalone story, Macross Plus happens quite some time after the original Macross and deals with competing variable fighters for a new military contract (shown above), as well as the introduction and inevitable misuse of artificial intelligence.
The English-dubbed version of Macross Plus famously included the voice talents of both Bryan Cranston and David Hayter. However, this showing of the movie will be of the original Japanese version with English subtitles.
If you’re unable to make the event, you can still buy both the series and movie of Macross Plus as an extensive Blu-ray box set over at Crunchyroll for $133.
