New Study Says AI Is Making Us Stupid—But Does It Have To?

New Study Says AI Is Making Us Stupid—But Does It Have To?

A new study published in Societies examines how the growing reliance on artificial intelligence, or AI, tools may undermine critical thinking skills, particularly through the phenomenon of cognitive offloading. This research raises significant implications for professionals who depend on AI in high-stakes fields, such as law and forensic science, where overreliance on technology can lead to errors with serious consequences.

As I reported last month, the use of AI by expert witnesses and attorneys in legal settings is a growing trend, but it comes with risks when the tools are used without sufficient oversight or validation. This study further underscores the dangers of such practices, highlighting how AI’s convenience can erode the quality of human decision-making and critical analysis.

The Study’s Findings on Cognitive Offloading And AI

The study surveyed 666 participants across various demographics to assess the impact of AI tools on critical thinking skills. Key findings included:

  • Cognitive Offloading: Frequent AI users were more likely to offload mental tasks, relying on the technology for problem-solving and decision-making rather than engaging in independent critical thinking.
  • Skill Erosion: Over time, participants who relied heavily on AI tools demonstrated reduced ability to critically evaluate information or develop nuanced conclusions.
  • Generational Gaps: Younger participants exhibited greater dependence on AI tools compared to older groups, raising concerns about the long-term implications for professional expertise and judgment.

The researchers warned that while AI can streamline workflows and enhance productivity, excessive dependence risks creating “knowledge gaps” where users lose the capacity to verify or challenge the outputs generated by these tools.

When professionals blindly trust AI outputs without verifying their accuracy, they risk introducing errors that can undermine cases, tarnish reputations and erode the trust placed in their expertise. Any profession requiring judgment and specialized knowledge can fall prey to the pitfalls of cognitive offloading, as a recent study demonstrates. Without adequate human oversight, AI tools may not just enhance workflows—they could compromise the very standards of excellence that experts are relied upon to uphold.

This problem isn’t limited to the courtroom. However, I regularly write and speak on AI in the courtroom, insurance, and forensics. These industries, which rely heavily on human expertise, are wrestling with the potential benefits, challenges and unknowns of AI. Given the high stakes implicit in these industries, they can act as the proverbial “canary in the coalmine” for future risks and challenges.

AI: Parallels From The Legal and Forensic Worlds

While AI can assist with data analysis or case preparation, there is a growing concern that experts and attorneys may over-rely on these tools without sufficiently verifying their accuracy. When professionals in law or forensics depend too heavily on AI tools, they take on inherent risks.

  • Unverified Data: AI tools can generate plausible but incorrect outputs, as seen in cases where fabricated evidence or inaccurate calculations were introduced into legal proceedings.
  • Erosion of Expertise: Over time, the habit of outsourcing complex tasks to AI may erode the skills needed to critically evaluate or challenge evidence.
  • Reduced Accountability: Blind trust in AI shifts responsibility away from individuals, creating a dangerous precedent where errors are overlooked or dismissed.

AI And Human Expertise: The Need for Balance

A key takeaway from both the study is that AI should be treated as a tool to enhance human capabilities, not replace them. To ensure this balance:

  • Expertise Must Lead: Human expertise must remain the cornerstone of decision-making. AI outputs should always be verified and contextualized by trained professionals.
  • Critical Thinking Is Essential: Users need to engage critically with AI-generated data, questioning its validity and considering alternative interpretations.
  • Regulation and Training Are Necessary: As AI becomes more prevalent, industries must develop robust standards for its use and ensure professionals are trained to understand both its potential and its limitations.

Whether in daily tasks or high-stakes fields like law and forensics, the human element remains essential to ensuring accuracy, accountability and ethical integrity. Without proper oversight and critical engagement, we risk compromising the very standards of expertise and trust that professionals are expected to uphold.
