NYT Connections Hints And Answers: Tuesday, July 14

Not the Connections game you’re looking for? Here are the hints and solution for Monday’s game and an explanation of the answers.

If you want to hang out with a lovely bunch of folks and chat about NYT Connections, other daily puzzle games and even the World Cup, join our Discord community!

Hey there, Connectors! I hope your week is off to a great start!

I’m a big proponent of Wikipedia. It’s an incredible resource and one of the few truly good things remaining on the internet. It’s a great starting point for researching a given topic, though it’s always worth verifying any claims made on the site. It does have some odd quirks, however. One of them really bothers me.

Sometimes, there isn’t a specific date of birth listed for a public figure. Instead, the page might state that they were born within a certain year or two. One page I recently saw listed the person’s birth year as 1984 or 1985. That’s fine. But it’s the next part that deeply annoyed me. It gave their age as “40 or 41.” That’s not quite accurate. The person could currently be 42! Because that’s how years work!

I see this from time to time. It makes the pedantic side of brain scream. Please make the screaming stop, Wikipedia.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Tuesday, July 14 are coming right up. Let’s get rolling!

How To Play Connections

Connections is a free daily New York Times game that challenges you to arrange a grid of 16 words, phrases or symbols into four groups. The categories can involve anything from simple synonyms and cultural references to words that start with homonyms for birds.

Play Puzzles & Games on Forbes

There’s only one correct answer. Connections often features red herrings and other tricks like wordplay. You can make three mistakes, but a fourth spells game over and the end of your current streak!

The categories are color coded. Yellow is supposed to be the easiest to figure out, followed by green, blue and then purple. But it’s all relative as Connections tests your knowledge and deductive reasoning skills.

You can track your stats over time and earn badges for achievements like lengthy streaks or achieving a reverse rainbow. This involves submitting the purple category first, followed by blue, green and yellow. I’m here to help players figure out which is which.

You can play Connections on the NYT website or NYT Games app. NYT subscribers can access the full archive of more than 1,100 games of Connections. Each day’s game goes live at midnight local time.

Today’s NYT Connections Word List

Scroll slowly!

After today’s Connections word list, I’ll give you a hint for each category. After that, I’ll reveal one word that goes into each group. Then I’ll reveal the categories, followed by the full answers.

Got it? Cool.

Today’s 16 words are…

  • U-TURN
  • PICNIC
  • CUT
  • SHUFFLE
  • LAUNDRY
  • RECYCLING
  • DEAL
  • COPY
  • BARGAIN
  • GROCERY
  • UNDERSTANDING
  • THIS SIDE UP
  • PASTE
  • AGREEMENT
  • EASTER
  • DELETE

A Hint For Today’s Connections Groups

The hints for today’s Connections categories are:

  • 🟨 Yellow group — an accord
  • 🟩 Green group — options that many writers will use dozens of times a day
  • 🟦 Blue group — fruit and hanging would fit in here
  • 🟪 Purple group — the right direction

One Answer For Each Connections Group

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one answer for each group.

Here we go…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — DEAL
  • 🟩 Green group — COPY
  • 🟦 Blue group — EASTER
  • 🟪 Purple group — U-TURN

Today’s Connections Categories

Today’s Connections groups are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — contract
  • 🟩 Green group — edit menu options
  • 🟦 Blue group — kinds of baskets
  • 🟪 Purple group — symbolized with arrows

What Is Today’s Connections Answer?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your last chance to look away.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — contract (AGREEMENT, BARGAIN, DEAL, UNDERSTANDING)
  • 🟩 Green group — edit menu options (COPY, CUT, DELETE, PASTE)
  • 🟦 Blue group — kinds of baskets (EASTER, GROCERY, LAUNDRY, PICNIC)
  • 🟪 Purple group — symbolized with arrows (RECYCLING, SHUFFLE, THIS SIDE UP, U-TURN)

After initially thinking that there might be a group of playing-card-related words, I didn’t see a fourth option that made sense. So I matched up CUT with the rest of the greens.

The yellows were up next. No real problem there, even if I did initially think BARGAIN and DEAL referred to a retail sale.

I got the baskets next for the blues. That left the purples for a 499th win in a row, even if it did take me a second to realize how SHUFFLE fit in there. It refers to said button on music apps.

How did you get on this time? Here’s my grid:

🟩🟩🟩🟩
🟨🟨🟨🟨
🟦🟦🟦🟦
🟪🟪🟪🟪

Not much scope for a NYT Connections Answers Explained column today. However, there was a bit of a red herring as CUT, SHUFFLE and DEAL are all related to playing cards. I didn’t see a fourth word that made sense with those though.

Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the answer for tomorrow’s game of Connections if you need them.

P.S. I guess this might be a themed week of discovering covers of songs I love dearly? We’ll see.

I had no idea until a few days ago that Mark Ronson (with the help of vocals from Domino) covered Queens of the Stone Age’s “No One Knows.” It probably won’t come as a shock that Ronson took a funk approach to this version. It’s cool, y’all. I’m into it:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!

Please follow my blog for more NYT Connections hints and help with other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. I’d really appreciate that as it helps me out. If you share this column with others who play Connections, that would be lovely too. You can also read my weekend editions of this column and more of my writing at my newsletter, Pastimes.
