NYT ‘Strands’ #68 Hints, Spangram And Answers For Friday, May 10th

Looking for Wednesday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here.

Another day, another Strands grid to solve. The word-hunting game continues to prove both popular and delightful, and a fun addition to my daily Wordle game. Today I kept finding words that weren’t part of the puzzle. I usually do, but today I found a bunch.

In any case, today’s was definitely a bit trickier than some, though not the hardest I’ve seen. Read on for some extra hints and clues to help you solve today’s grid, plus all the answers and spangram.

How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Strands still isn’t on the New York Times games app, but you can play it right here.

What Is Today’s Strands Hint?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hint for today’s Strands puzzle, I’ll reveal what the answer words are.

The official theme hint for today’s Strand puzzle is: Like a rocket

Here’s an extra hint to help guide you to the solution: Apollo 13

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Strands answers.

Today’s Spangram

I’ll first tell you the spangram and show you where that is on the grid. I’ll then tell you the other words and show you how they fit in.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Strands spangram is . . .

SPACEFLIGHT

Here’s where the Spangram is on the grid:

All Today’s Strands Answers

Today’s Strands words are all pretty obviously linked to the theme—Like a rocket—having to do with sending a spaceship or satellite into space, or back into Earth’s atmosphere. Think mostly about that process—what are words you’d associate with not just space flight but getting a craft in or out of our planet’s gravity and what that craft might do once it’s in the vacuum of space. The hardest word has to do with landing in water.

If you need extra help, spoilers below!

Here’s the full list of words:

  • Launch
  • Reentry
  • Splashdown
  • Encounter
  • Orbit

Today’s Strands Breakdown

With only five words and the spangram, today’s puzzle wasn’t as hard as it could have been, but it still had me for a bit even after I’d found ORBIT. Once I had LAUNCH, however, I quickly saw the word SPACE and since I’d already toyed around with FLYER (which wasn’t a correct guess) I quickly surmised that SPACE led to SPACEFLIGHT. From here, ENCOUNTER was obvious but I still had a bit of a tough time with SPLASHDOWN, having already tried SPLASH. Once that was done, REENTRY was the final word and that was that. Houston, we no longer have a problem.

How did you do on your Strands today? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.
