NYT ‘Strands’ Hints, Spangram And Answers For Friday, August 23rd

Looking for Thursday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:

The week has at last come to an end and the weekend is about to begin. This will be my last Strands guide for the nonce; I’ll return in two weeks time, when the wind changes, to take back over from my colleagues, Kris Holt and Paul Tassi. There have been some great grids to solve this week and a couple really challenging one, including today’s. Let’s dive right in!

Strands is the newest game in the New York Times’ stable of puzzle games. It’s a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we’re given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. Let’s solve today’s, shall we?

What Is Today’s Strands Hint?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hint for today’s Strands puzzle, I’ll reveal what the answer words are.

The official theme hint for today’s Strands puzzle is: The nose knows.

Here’s an extra thematic clue to help guide you to the solution: You should use common sense when solving this puzzle, or at least something that sounds like common sense.

To help you uncover all the words, here are the first two letters of every word, including the spangram, in today’s puzzle:

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Strands answers.

Today’s Spangram

Before we list all the words, I’ll tell you today’s Spangram and show you where that is on the grid.

This is your final spoiler warning!

Today’s Strands spangram is . . .

COMMONSCENTS

Here’s where the Spangram is on the grid:

All Today’s Strands Answers

If you need extra help, getting the rest of the words . . . spoilers below!

Here’s the full list of words:

  • CEDAR
  • LAVENDAR
  • ROSE
  • LEMON
  • MUSK
  • SANDALWOOD

Today’s Strands Breakdown

Another very tough Strands grid today. I had a lot of trouble uncovering these words, though I found two possible versions of SCENTS (or SCENT) early on and knew that it had to be part of the spangram when it didn’t work. But how? I had the worst time finding the spangram today, and actually only found it after every other word had been uncovered. Some of these were pretty easy, like ROSE and LEMON, but others—even short ones like MUSK—evaded me. I did spot SANDALWOOD fairly quickly, having found WOOD already, but LAVENDAR was super tough. All in all, despite these being common scents they weren’t easy to find. Better to find scents with your nose, though, I suppose.

How did you do on your Strands today? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.

Be sure to check out my blog for my daily Wordle guides as well as all my other writing about TV shows, streaming guides, movie reviews, video game coverage and much more. Thanks for stopping by!
