Owners of Samsung Galaxy flagships frustrated at the wait for Android 15 were suddenly given a glimmer of hope that upgrades may be coming sooner than expected. But One UI 7 appeared and then disappeared within just 24 hours. And the most serious question remains—does this signal a serious gap to Google’s Pixel.
The week has just ended with an unexpected surprise, as “Samsung’s Spanish website revealed details about One UI 7.” This is Samsung’s OS wrap around Android 15, and it now expected to begin trickling out in beta form this month with the full, stable release delayed until the launch of the new Galaxy S25 series early next year.
As Neowin reported on Friday, “yesterday, we caught a glimpse at the new One UI 7 media player widget in action, along with changes to app icons and the interfaces of some apps. Some of the alleged One UI 7 apps are now available to download, offering a taste of One UI 7 ahead of its official debut.”
This came courtesy of Samsung’s website in Spain, which “for the first time spilled the beans about the upcoming features of the One UI 7 skin. On its official Samsung Spanish website, a video about One UI 7 suggests that the update will be powered by Galaxy AI, with a tagline saying ‘AI powering every step’.”
But a day later, per Phone Arena, “Samsung removed the accidental One UI 7 information page from its website… This isn’t the first time Samsung has made a mistake like this: its German website accidentally revealed information about One UI 6 before it was due. But it’s always fun to see it happen and it gives the various tipsters a reason to pat themselves on the back for a job well done.”
So no early release, which means we’re on the same delayed schedule we expected. And only certain devices in certain geographies will likely get to play with the beta when it’s released. For everyone else it’s very much a case of wait and see until 2025.
This follows the other bad news earlier this month that seamless updates, the cleaner, crisper approach adopted by Pixels and others devices, doesn’t look like it’s coming either before the S25, and maybe only for those newer devices.
The challenge now is how Samsung’s compare to Pixels from a security and privacy standpoint. Samsung has just shared details of its secretive cyber unit tasked with monitoring threats around the world to make its devices safer. This focuses on more sophisticated, targeted attacks. More common malware and privacy abuses are being tacked by Android more broadly, and in that regard Android 15 is a game changer.
Google has introduced live threat detection powered by on-device AI, scale call protection and even an early iteration of cellular network defense, albeit that one requires new hardware updates not yet available. We don’t know which if any of these will make it into One UI 7’s stable release. Samsung isn’t yet commenting.
The beta is imminent, and so some of these questions might be answered soon. But as we saw with Pixels, sometimes what makes it into a beta teases features that are removed before the final release, and so we won’t know.
What is clear from the latest One UI 7 leaks and the mistaken Spanish website update, is that Android 15 is all about AI for Samsung. And that inevitably raises a different security and privacy questions, specifically how it hybrid AI compares to Apple’s new private cloud compute. That will be especially evident when we see the S25’s on-device and privacy-first AI offerings as compared to the latest iPhone 16.
Meanwhile, with every passing week, the gap between Galaxy and Pixel widens, with Google’s device now well advanced with its Android 15 rollout. Android 16 is expected earlier than usual in 2025, and all Galaxy users will be hoping Samsung catches up.
