See A Solar Eclipse, The Perseids And A 96% ‘Blood Moon:’ August’s Sky

Topline

August 2026 is the biggest month of the year for skywatchers, bringing a rare total solar eclipse across parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain (and a partial eclipse to Europe, the U.S. and Canada), the peak of the Perseid meteor shower under perfectly dark skies, brilliant Venus at its highest in the evening sky and a deep partial lunar eclipse at month’s end. With Jupiter returning to the predawn sky, a comet lingering and the possibility of a nova explosion, August offers almost every major kind of celestial event in a single month. Here’s everything you need to know about stargazing in August 2026.

Timeline

Thursday, Aug. 6–Saturday, Aug. 15The last-quarter moon on Aug. 6 begins August’s best dark-sky window, with moonless evenings providing ideal conditions for seeing the Milky Way and deep-sky objects.

Wednesday, Aug. 12A total solar eclipse crosses eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. Outside the path of totality, a deep partial solar eclipse will be visible across much of Europe shortly before sunset, while northeastern North America sees a shallow partial eclipse during the afternoon.

Wednesday-Thursday, Aug. 12-13The Perseid meteor shower peaks just hours after the eclipse under virtually perfect moonless skies. Under dark conditions, observers could see 80 to 100 meteors per hour, making this the finest meteor display of 2026.

Saturday, Aug. 15Venus reaches greatest eastern elongation, shining high in the western sky after sunset. The brilliant “Evening Star” is now half-lit through a telescope and will continue brightening as it grows into a crescent in the weeks ahead.

Mid-to-late AugustJupiter begins to emerge from the bright predawn twilight after disappearing into the sun’s glare at the end of July. The giant planet will be low in the eastern sky before sunrise, but early risers will see it climb a little higher each morning.

Thursday-Friday, Aug. 27-28A deep partial lunar eclipse occurs when 96% of the full moon enters Earth’s shadow. North and South America will enjoy the best views overnight, while Europe sees the eclipse before dawn.

An Eclipsed Sun From North America

Although the spotlight will be on the total solar eclipse crossing eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain, observers across parts of North America will also get a chance to see the moon take a bite out of the sun on Aug. 12. 26 U.S. states — mostly in the Northeast — will see a partial solar eclipse around lunchtime, while every Canadian province experiences at least a small eclipse. The deepest eclipse in the continental U.S. occurs in northern Maine, where up to 28% of the sun will be eclipsed, while much of New England and New York will see between 10% and 20%. Across Canada, more than half the sun will be covered from parts of Newfoundland and Labrador — and over 60% from Nunavut. Although daylight won’t noticeably dim outside the path of totality, it’s a worthwhile event, though one that must be viewed using certified solar eclipse glasses or a properly filtered telescope or binoculars.

The Year’s Best Meteor Shower — And The Milky Way

The Perseids reach their peak overnight on Aug. 12-13 in almost perfect conditions. Because the new moon falls at virtually the same time, moonlight will not interfere, allowing even faint meteors to become visible from dark locations. The Perseids can produce 80 to 100 meteors per hour, including occasional bright fireballs, making 2026 one of the best years in recent memory to watch the shower. The combination of a moonless sky and the Milky Way arching overhead could make this the standout night for skywatching all year. About two hours after sunset, look south from a dark location to see the Milky Way stretching through the Summer Triangle, with its dense star clouds and dark dust lanes clearly visible under transparent skies.

’Blaze Star’ Watch Continues

August is also the best month of the year to watch Corona Borealis, the distinctive semicircle of stars high in the southern sky after dark. The constellation culminates during August evenings, putting it at its highest and easiest to find between the bright stars Arcturus and Vega. It’s home to T Coronae Borealis, the famous “Blaze Star” that’s expected to erupt during 2026 as a rare recurrent nova, briefly becoming visible to the naked eye. If the nova does erupt while Corona Borealis is riding high in the evening sky, it will be far easier to spot than during much of the rest of the year.

What’s Next In The Night Sky

September 2026 will see Venus dominate the evening sky. Later, the autumnal equinox arrives on Sept. 22, marking the start of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Neptune reaches opposition on Sept. 25, making the distant ice giant visible all night in a telescope and at its brightest of the year through telescopes, before the full Harvest Moon rises on Sept. 26, bringing one of the year’s most photogenic full moons.
