It has become the Half-Life 3 of our generation, but finally, after more than six years, we are finally getting actual, tangible information about Hollow Knight: Silksong. It once started out as bonus content for the first game, but it was announced it would become its own release…back in February 2019.
It’s been a running joke in the industry about how infrequent updates have been about Silksong to the point where many wondered if it was coming out at all. But unlike Half-Life 3, it actually is.
After some hands-on previews yesterday, the much-anticipated announcement stream today, viewed by more than over 300,000 people on YouTube, had more to say.
It’s a trailer for the game, sure, but the key announcement here is the release date. Hollow: Knight Silksong will be out on September 4, 2025, just two weeks from today. That will make it around six and a half years since it was first announced.

The trailer showed the game in action and promises 200 foes to fight and 40 bosses. They showed off map navigation, still a Metroidvania format, of course, and the combat and traversal, which unsurprisingly look excellent.
2017’s Hollow Knight was a huge hit among both critics and fans, and it seemed a follow-up game would obviously be in short order. Well, there was nothing “short” about that wait, though now it’s upon us, and that’s genuinely hard to believe.
If Silksong is good enough, it may launch itself into a wild race for GOTY in 2025 with Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2, Blue Prince, Donkey Kong Bananza, Split Fiction and others. It will sell millions, and though the last we heard was that Hollow Knight had moved 3 million copies by 2020, and not much since then, it stands to reason it will outpace it given how long this has been anticipated. If you don’t have any history with the series, it’s easy to go play Hollow Knight now. It’s $15 on Steam, and has aged well.
It’s a little surreal that this moment has actually arrived, but now that it has, fans no longer have to wait years, they just have to wait two weeks. We’ll see if it was worth this years-long gap soon enough for ourselves.
