Singapore launches FirstDate dating service for government workers

Singapore launches FirstDate dating service for government workers

We’ve all seen those emails or spam ads, telling us of singles in our areas. Sometimes they get past our spam blocker and pop up in our email box. While most of us might delete them, some Singaporean civil servants might soon reconsider: it may very well be a dating service, courtesy of the government.

FirstDate, a pilot program introduced by Singapore’s Government Technology Agency (GovTech), offers single public officers ages 21 to 35 one potential match. Once users receive a match, they have 72 hours to decide whether or not to connect. And because the Singaporean government can’t be too sure, the program relies on a Nobel Prize-winning matching theory algorithm to really get their employees together.

“Swipe fatigue ends here,” reads the new pilot program’s website. The experiment taps into a familiar dating-app frustration: whether more options make it easier to find the one—or just make choosing harder. That’s why it’s relying on the Gale-Shapley algorithm, which is part of the matching theory that earned Lloyd Shapley and Alvin Roth the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2012. The algorithm allows FirstDate to produce stable pairings where no two participants would both prefer each other over their assigned matches.

“Limiting the choice set resets the dating environment to one that is more manageable by human brains,” said Norman Li, a psychology professor at Singapore Management University who studies partner preferences. People can feel overwhelmed by too many perceived choices, Li told Fortune, making it harder to find a partner or commit.

Subhed about falling population

The pilot comes against a backdrop of later marriages and falling fertility. Singapore’s resident total fertility rate fell to 0.87 births per woman in 2025, down from 0.97 in 2024. The median age at first marriage reached 31.1 for grooms and 29.6 for brides, compared with 30.3 and 28.2 a decade earlier, according to Singapore’s Department of Statistics.

FirstDate’s website describes its purpose as supporting singles in their dating journey, without explicitly identifying higher birth rates as a goal. Users receive one potential match at a time, along with a compatibility score, a description, and a personal note.

GovTech officers explored the idea at the agency’s annual hackathon, developing a service that emphasizes compatibility and gives users more time to consider each introduction, according to the website. The concept went public in April, when GovTech surveyed singles on an early version. One design floated a government-subsidized first-date meal, according to the Straits Times.

Users complete a questionnaire covering typical first-date topics, including interests, habits, preferences, and values. That’s when FirstDate applies the Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm, a mathematical approach that pairs participants based on their preferences.

Both participants receive an SMS notifying them of the match. From then on, only their profiles are visible to each other, and contact details are shared only if both accept. A subsequent survey asks how things went, including whether participants exchanged contact details and met in person.

GovTech told Fortune that FirstDate is a limited pilot and that it had no further information to share beyond what was already publicly available. Applications close Oct. 5.

Li sees identity verification as one potential advantage of a government-run service. “The government offers greater security, including identity verification, which helps ensure that users are more legitimate and single,” he said.

That appealed to Elizabeth, a 29-year-old Defense Ministry employee interested in trying FirstDate, who told the BBC that the likelihood of being scammed is “much lower.”

“We’re all public servants looking for a partner, right?” she told the BBC.

Who gets a match?

Getting people to participate could nonetheless be a challenge. “It’s possible that some people might be concerned about the government being involved in their intimate life,” Li said.

Some Singaporeans have called the pilot “dystopian,” the BBC reported, and others argued it shuts out anyone who doesn’t work for the government. Even Reddit users joined in the discussion, joking about being too old to qualify. “Lol ages 21-35. So it’s true above 35 even [the government] gives up on you?” wrote user RexRender in an r/singapore discussion.

This isn’t a first for Singapore. In January 1984, the government set up the Social Development Unit to match university graduates working in the public service. The initiative reflected then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s concern that fewer children born to educated women would shrink the country’s future talent pool, as described in a National Library account.

Singapore isn’t alone, either. Tokyo’s metropolitan government launched its own dating app in 2024, and by June 2026, 265 couples had married through the service, according to Global Dating Insights.

Li sees promise in FirstDate, but says matchmaking alone cannot resolve every obstacle to a relationship. “A new matchmaking platform can increase mate search effectiveness and create new possibilities, especially for serious users,” he said.

He pointed to financial pressures, job and economic uncertainty, chronic stress, social isolation, and a lack of family support as factors that can complicate dating, marriage, and parenthood.

The service itself acknowledges the limits of matching people through a questionnaire.

“Of course, compatibility on paper doesn’t guarantee chemistry or a match leading to a relationship,” its website states. “Where it goes from there is up to you.”
