The thoroughly excellent Super Robot Wars Y gets its final update and DLC pack in the next few days.
Firstly, the free update to version 1.40 increases the pilot level cap to 200 and adds two new missions to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Super Robot Wars series and its lifetime sales of 20 million units. There will also be a new “Boost” mode included to make the game a bit easier.
Secondly, the next DLC pack, called the Anniversary Expansion Pack, will include 33 new area missions, 12 new weapons, five new playable units (including the Gundam Calibarn from Witch from Mercury), a new Assist member, and an additional bonus mission.
The other big news is the re-inclusion of combination attacks. Normally, these tended to be within certain series, such as Mazinger Z and Getter Robo, in prior games, but it seems this now also includes genre and class types, such as with L-Gaim and Dunbine, which is interesting.
While this is the last update and DLC for Super Robot Wars Y, I am more than happy with that. We’ve already had multiple updates and DLC packs released, and the fact we’re still getting content nearly a year after the game came out is really great.
One minor point worth mentioning, though, is that in the new trailer (shown below), the Billbine gets its new long rifle launcher (shown above) as seen in the Side R footage from 2024. We’ve already seen prototype toys include these weapons from around the same time, but it’s nice to see these weapons actually included in a Super Robot Wars game.
This is likely driven by the insane popularity of Aura Battler Dunbine in Japan these days, despite the anime being first broadcast back in 1983.
The final free update for Super Robot Wars Y is released on August 4, with the Anniversary Expansion Pack released on August 5. My review for the Switch version of the game can be found here.
