While we knew that Dragon Quest III was getting remastered, it’s now been revealed that the entire Erdrick Trilogy of games will get the same treatment.
Arguably the crown jewels of role-playing games are the Erdrick Trilogy of Dragon Quest games. These are the first three Dragon Quest games in the long running franchise and are based around a hero known as Erdrick.
The Erdrick Trilogy is also told out of sequence, with Dragon Quest III being chronologically the first in the story, followed by the first Dragon Quest and then Dragon Quest II.
You can currently play the Erdrick Trilogy in a mildly remastered form already, but these new HD-2D games are more in line with how Octopath Traveller and Triangle Strategy work.
In that, the characters are depicted as charming pixelated sprites, whereas the environments are rendered in 3D, via a forced perspective approach.
Triangle Strategy is also pertinent here, as Artdink are co-developing these HD-2D Dragon Quest remasters along with Square Enix.
Artdink are an interesting studio, with a storied heritage. They also make decent mecha games, with the recent SD Gundam Battle Alliance being a solid example.
In any case, the HD-2D setup has proven very popular with gamers, and I am glad that the entire Erdrick Trilogy is being given the same treatment.
The first release will be Dragon Quest III the Switch on November 14, followed by Dragon Quest I and II next year.
For many, Dragon Quest III is regarded as one of the best games in the series, but I also think Dragon Quest XI also holds up too. Dragon Quest XI is also tied into the Erdrick Trilogy of games, but I don’t want to spoil that for you if you’ve not played it.
