‘The Penguin’ Season 2, More Shows, Sofia Falcone’s Future

The Penguin walked away with nine awards at the Emmys last night, the most high profile of which was Cristin Milioti taking home a well-deserved trophy for playing Sofia Falcone, resulting in a viral acceptance speech. Colin Farrell lost. Lame.

In the wake of The Penguin’s Emmy haul, we got a lot of updates about the Reevesverse from Matt Reeves himself, and there’s some good news, surprising news and bad news.

Milioti’s Sofia Falcone will not be in the next The Batman movie. Reeves spoke to MTV about this, and it was no slight to her, it was just something that couldn’t come together because of the way The Batman Part 2 was coming along:

“Cristin’s not in this one, but that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time of [The Penguin]… I think she’s incredible.”

However, there may be some hope for her return, and not just in The Batman Part 3, maybe (in 2035, no doubt). There have been rumblings about this for a while, but Reeves is back and chatting about a potential Penguin season 2, even if it was meant to be a limited series. They are “in discussions”:

“If we can do more, and if it can be as good or better than last season… we definitely would love to.”

He also talked about how they were “toying” with the idea of Pattinson’s Batman showing up in The Penguin season 1, but ultimately it never came together. Previously, Colin Farrell has confirmed he’s in The Batman Part 2, but not a whole lot.

And there is, of course, the ongoing, supposed plan about doing even more spin-offs with characters in the Reeveseverse, albeit none of have been brought up specifically yet. A rumored Joker one has previously been shot down by James Gunn. Presumably, the idea was to pepper these in between The Batman movies, but this whole universe has not exactly been moving along quickly. Here’s what Reeves said to Deadline about the prospect:

“There are absolutely other characters that we have talked about doing that I would be really honored and excited if we had that opportunity.”

The question about whether this world is going to be brought into the DCU, and Robert Pattinson will be the DCU’s Batman appears to be answered, and that answer is no. Despite James Gunn previously saying things like “never say never,” things seem to be moving full steam ahead on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the announced DCU Batman feature that has a script Gunn has praised. And that script does not star Pattinson, obviously. It’s been a fan dream for a while, but you can see how given the production of both universes, this is simply not going to work in the end.

So, lots of updates, lots of Emmys. Next up is The Batman Part 2, which is supposed to start filming imminently for an alleged October 2027 release date.
