I have received an email from Casio informing me of a security incident that may have impacted some of my personal information. The only surprise is that it’s taken so long to arrive, considering that Casio issued an official statement regarding a ransomware attack on Oct. 11. That statement confirmed that the ransomware attack occurred on Oct. 08 and had caused the leakage of personal information and confidential internal information. Today, Casio went a step further to confirm that the personal information could include my name, address and email. “At this time,” the Casio email signed by Richard Sharpe, Casio’s U.K. data protection officer, said, “there is no evidence that sensitive data like passwords or payment details were compromised.”

The full text of the data breach notification email from Casio is as follows:
“Dear Casio Customer
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inform you of a security incident that may have affected some of your personal information.
While we are still investigating the full scope of the situation, we want to be transparent and inform you as quickly as possible. The information that may have been illegally accessed in our network includes name, address & email. At this time, there is no evidence that sensitive data like passwords or payment details were compromised.
We take the security of your personal information very seriously. As a precautionary measure, we recommend that you:
- Monitor your accounts for any suspicious activity.
- Change your passwords for any services where you use similar credentials.
- Be cautious of any unexpected emails or phone calls asking for personal details.

The October Casio Ransomware Attack
Casio has not confirmed that the data breach notification is in response to the October ransomware attack, but I have reached out to the company for clarification.
In the meantime if, as seems likely, this does relate to the ransomware attack, Casio has previously stated that it had experienced a system failure on Oct. 05 on some servers that rendered them unusable.
