To Achieve Quantum-Resilient Cryptography, Avoid These Five Machine Identity Management Pitfalls

Gregory Webb is the CEO of AppViewX, a cybersecurity and IT infrastructure automation platform enabling digital transformation.

Digital transformation continues to push organizations to increase their reliability on machine-to-machine functions, apps and services. This shift has also led to a corresponding increase in machine identities, which creates a serious enterprise cybersecurity blind spot.

For example, cloud-native applications, IoT devices and interconnected systems rely on trusted machine identities, provided by public and private digital certificates, to authenticate and encrypt communications. Yet, despite the critical role these machine identities play in the organization’s identity-first security initiative, many struggle to effectively manage thousands to millions of digital certificates.

Key Challenges In Machine Identity Management

Several factors contribute to the challenges faced by IT security executives in managing machine identities. The rapid pace of digital disruption, coupled with the complexities of hybrid and multicloud environments, creates fertile ground for management oversight.

Cloud adoption, while offering numerous benefits, also leads to an explosion of machine identities, potentially complicating management efforts further. Moreover, reliance on manual management methods, such as spreadsheets and ad hoc processes, can be inadequate in the face of distributed networks and perimeter-less environments, leaving organizations vulnerable to human errors.

The shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals exacerbates these challenges. With many organizations lacking dedicated teams for managing public key infrastructure (PKI), digital certificates and machine identities, ITOps teams are often overburdened with responsibilities. This not only hampers security efforts but also increases the risk of costly outages and security breaches.

The accelerated pace of digital transactions coupled with the expansion of attack surfaces has further compounded the challenges faced by cybersecurity executives. The fear of unexpected outages and advanced security risks looms large, with service downtime caused by expired certificates and hackers exploiting weak and outdated cryptography to gain unauthorized access to networks. These cyber threats, ranging from malware to phishing attacks, pose significant risks to organizational security and stability.

To complicate matters, a proposal by Google to reduce the validity period of TLS certificates from 398 to 90 days has introduced new challenges for IT security executives to navigate. While shorter validity periods will enhance security by minimizing the window of opportunity for attackers to exploit compromised or weak certificates, they also introduce operational challenges for organizations.

Managing certificate renewals at shorter intervals requires robust automation and coordination across disparate systems, which poses a significant logistical burden for IT teams. Moreover, frequent certificate renewals increase the risk of human error, as manual processes become more prone to oversight and delays. As organizations grapple with the implications of shorter certificate lifetimes, striking a balance between security and operational efficiency has become a chief concern for CIOs and CISOs.

The advent of quantum computing also poses an existential threat to traditional digital certificates and encryption algorithms. Unlike classical computers, which rely on binary bits, quantum computers leverage quantum bits or qubits, enabling them to perform complex calculations exponentially faster. This exponential increase in computing power could render traditional encryption methods obsolete, allowing quantum-enabled adversaries to decrypt sensitive information protected by current cryptographic standards.

As quantum computing capabilities continue to advance, more organizations are preparing for the inevitability of quantum-resilient cryptography. Transitioning to quantum-safe algorithms and updating digital certificates to withstand quantum attacks can help safeguard machine identities in the quantum computing era.

Proactive investment in quantum-resistant technologies and cryptographic standards can help mitigate the risks posed by quantum computing and better ensure the long-term security of digital ecosystems. However, the task of updating machine identities at scale with quantum-resilient certificates can be quite daunting.

Five Automated Machine Identity Pitfalls To Avoid

For CISOs embracing automation for machine identity management to streamline processes, minimize errors and enhance their security posture in light of these challenges, there are five common pitfalls to avoid when beginning the implementation journey.

1. Limited Visibility

You can’t manage what you can’t see. Without complete visibility of machine identities and digital certificates, critical blind spots can create operational issues and security weaknesses.

2. Not Fully Automating

Not all automated certificate life cycle management (CLM) approaches are created equal. Choosing a framework that provides visibility, automation and control of certificates from any public and private trust across your hybrid multicloud infrastructure is essential to success.

3. Lack Of Governance And Control

Establishing and enforcing an enterprisewide certificate and crypto policy is now more important than ever. Without proper control, the organization’s security and compliance posture will be at risk.

4. Not Enabling Crypto Agility

With the advent of shorter validity periods for certificates and post-quantum cryptography, being crypto-agile is necessary to quickly adapt to these changes and be prepared for other emerging crypto threats.

5. Misaligned And Siloed Teams

DevOps, NetOps, ITOps, CloudOps and SecOps all play a vital role in machine identity and digital certificate management. Self-service capabilities aligned to an enterprisewide crypto policy support cross-functional collaboration and effective management.

Final Thoughts

By addressing these challenges proactively, organizations can harness the power of automation to enhance security, streamline operations and mitigate the risks associated with the explosive growth of machine identities. As organizations begin preparing for automation, cross-functional teams should start aligning on policies and training to ensure automation strategies are rolled out properly to meet the requirements of post-quantum cryptography.
