Today’s NYT ‘Connections’ Hints And Answers For Thursday, May 23

Looking for Wednesday’s Connections hints and answers? You can find them here:

Hey there, gang! Happy Thursday. I hope you’re having an excellent week so far.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

In Connections, you’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like horror movie franchises, a type of verb or rappers.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is typically the hardest one to deduce. The purple group often involves wordplay, so bear that in mind.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers.

What Are Today’s Connections Hints?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them.

Today’s 16 words are:

  • CULTURE
  • HEYDAY
  • SPORTS
  • HIJINKS
  • USE
  • UP
  • YOGURT
  • MILK
  • COPY
  • EXPLOIT
  • OVER
  • SUPPER
  • LEVERAGE
  • DONE
  • THROUGH
  • CITY

And the hints for today’s groups are:

  1. Yellow group — use for one’s own ends
  2. Green group — concluded, realized
  3. Blue group — sections of a periodical office
  4. Purple group — they open with a welcoming remark

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Today’s groups are…

  • Yellow group — take advantage of
  • Green group — finished, as time
  • Blue group — newspaper desks
  • Purple group — words beginning with greetings

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

  • Yellow group — take advantage of (EXPLOIT, LEVERAGE, MILK, USE)
  • Green group — finished, as time (DONE, OVER, THROUGH, UP)
  • Blue group — newspaper desks (CITY, COPY, CULTURE, SPORTS)
  • Purple group — words beginning with greetings (HEYDAY, HIJINKS, SUPPER, YOGURT)

I didn’t get a perfect game, though I now have back-to-back wins. I made just one mistake, but it was one that’s going to haunt me for a while.

It took me a while to make a breakthrough today. I saw a lot of things that have had the makings of groups (i.e. MILK, YOGURT and CULTURE) but nothing was quite adding up. I eventually figured out the yellows but it took a minute to click that MILK should be one of those words. Honestly, that feels more like green or blue difficulty.

The greens were next thanks to the grid pushing most of those words together and making my job slightly easier. But then (but then!) came the error.

I figured that CITY, CULTURE and SPORTS were newspaper sections, but the fourth word stumped me. Eventually, I determined that the funny section, the comics section, of some newspapers might be called HIJINKS. So I went with that. And seconds later I was very annoyed with myself when I realized the correct answer.

That’s because my very first job in journalism… was on a newspaper copy desk (it was actually the “subs’ desk” in the U.K. but close enough). I apologize to my younger self and anyone who has ever worked in this industry.

Ahem.

The purples were left. I figured out the connection. And I was done.

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog for hints and the solution for Friday’s game if you need them.

P.S. I turned to a random selection from my main 900-song playlist for today’s recommendation and ended up with a punchy little cracker. I never really got into The Coral save for a few songs, including this delight:
