It’s the first Wordle Wednesday of April, and I’ll be honest I’m still getting used to the idea that it’s April. How did March fly by so fast? How are we in the second quarter of the year already? I’ll turn 43 in less than three months, and I’m not sure how to feel about it. I suppose it’s kind of a boring year. I’m still settling into the idea that I’m middle-aged. I feel it in my body but not in my brain.
In any case, it’s Wordle Wednesday so it’s time for a riddle, brain teaser or logic puzzle. I post that today and then in tomorrow’s guide I’ll post the answer. You can message me on Twitter and Facebook if you come up with the answer. Here’s today’s:
Three survivors of a plane crash are trapped on top of a plateau surrounded on all sides by sheer cliffs, 100 meters down to the ravine below. The narrowest point to safety is 100 feet across. All they have with them is a 20 foot ladder, a 10 foot ladder, a tank filled with gasoline, as much rope as they need, two books of matches, a 6 foot metal pole and an inflatable mattress. How do they get across to safety?

Today’s guessing game went pretty well. I picked alone because I’m writing—or trying to write—something about Taxi Driver, which I recently rewatched for the first time in many years. It’s a film about being alone, lacking purpose or meaning. I have been pondering what that means, and thinking about death and how easily it is to be overcome with despair. (I had that word in my head last night as I lay awake, insomniac, but it’s too long for a Wordle guess).
Just 26 words remained and I had a yellow and a green box. I decided to rearrange the yellow ‘A’ but use all new letters and try to snag a vowel. Stair did all that and more, giving me all but one letter. Even the yellow ‘T’ I knew had to be at the end of the word, because very few words start with ‘TL’. The only thing I could come up with was plait, and it was the Wordle!

How To Play Competitive Wordle
Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “plait” comes from the Old French “pleit,” meaning a fold or pleat, which itself derives from the Latin “plicitum,” a past participle of “plicare,” meaning to fold. The term entered the English language in the late 14th century. Initially, it referred to a way of folding fabric but later came to describe the process of braiding or intertwining strands, most commonly hair. This evolution in meaning reflects the technique’s visual similarity to folded or pleated materials, as both involve intricate patterns created by overlapping or interlacing different elements.
