Welcome back to Wordle Wednesday, oh dearest Wordlers! Every Wednesday we spice things up around here by adding a riddle, brain teaser or logic puzzle to the mix. It’s good to keep our wits sharp and I like keeping readers on their toes. Here’s today’s riddle:
A big black dog stood in the middle of a black road. There were no street lights above the road. An old car with broken headlights drove towards the dog but turned in time before he hit it. How did the driver see the dog in time?

Another tricky Wordle today where I was once again left with virtually no letters even after two words and most of the vowels spent. STAKE was pretty unlucky, with a lonely yellow ‘A’ and 265 words remaining. CHOIR (which I think I guessed yesterday for my second guess) only cut that number to 53.
I tried ALBUM next—Wordle Bot chided me later and said I should have picked MANLY—and that left me with just five, though I could only think of about four. One was GAYLY which I thought was mildly ironic and funny given that another was PAPAL and Pope Francis was just in the news . . . .
I chose PAPAL because it just seemed so timely, and sure enough, it was right!

How To Play Competitive Wordle
Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “papal” originates from the Latin word “pāpalis,” which means “of or relating to the pope.” This, in turn, is derived from “pāpa,” the Latin word for “pope,” which itself comes from the Greek word “πάππας” (pappas), meaning “father” or “bishop.” The term “pappas” was a respectful form of address used for priests and bishops in early Christianity, reflecting the paternal role of the clergy. Over time, “papal” came to specifically refer to matters pertaining to the Pope, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
