It’s Thor’s Day and that means I owe you the answer to yesterday’s riddle, which was:
One day a cowboy rides into a town he has never been there before. He rides up to the saloon ties up his horse and heads inside. He goes to the bartender and asks for a glass of water the bartender says nothing and grabs his rifle from under the table and fires a single shot into the roof. The cowboy thanks the bartender and rides off into the sunset. Why does the bartender do this and why does the cowboy thank him?
The answer? He had the hiccups, and the firing of the rifle made a loud sound, startling the cowboy’s hiccups into oblivion. Kind of a silly riddle, but what’s life if not a little silly.

How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

SCARE was an okay guess, leaving me with 103 words and one green “E”. I tried all new letters with TOUGH, which gave me the ‘U’ and for whatever reason I came up with FLUME and popped it in there. I think if I’d thought of PLUME first I would have guessed that, so I just got super lucky! Huzzah for me! Huzzah for luck!
Competitive Wordle Score
Just like yesterday, I get 2 points (1 for guessing in three and 1 for beating the Bot) while the Bot loses 1 for losing to me and gets 0 for guessing in four. And just like that it’s a tie game in July!

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
“Flume” comes from Old French flum or flun, from Latin flumen, meaning “river” or “flowing water,” derived from fluere (“to flow”). It entered English to mean a channel or artificial watercourse, especially one used to carry water or logs.
