Total Solar Eclipse ‘Map Of Nope’ Meme Is A Must-See Before August

Topline

A total solar eclipse is coming to Europe, but only to a narrow path across parts of eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain on Aug. 12. Only those inside that path — the moon’s dark central shadow — will experience totality. Everyone else across western Europe and parts of North America will see a partial eclipse — a technically interesting sight, but missing the defining moment of totality, when the sky goes dark and the solar corona becomes visible to the naked eye. That’s why the so-called “Map of Nope” meme, created by eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at EclipseAtlas.com, will once again go viral ahead of this event. It cuts through the confusion with a simple message: if you’re not in the path of totality, you cannot experience a total solar eclipse.

Key Facts

On Aug. 12, a total solar eclipse will cross Greenland, Iceland and Spain, with totality lasting up to 2 minutes 18 seconds near Iceland. In Spain, totality will occur just before sunset.

The eclipse will be a historic event, marking Iceland’s first total solar eclipse since 1954, Spain’s first since 1905, and mainland Europe’s first since 1999.

Millions outside the path of totality will still see a partial eclipse, including observers across much of Europe, northwestern Africa, eastern Canada and parts of the northeastern U.S.

Anyone viewing any stage of the partial solar eclipse must use ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses to safely view the event. Only those within the path of totality will be able to remove their eclipse glasses, and then only during totality itself.

Total solar eclipses happen somewhere on Earth roughly every 16 months, yet for any one place they are rare, often occurring only once every few centuries.

WHAT MANY GET WRONG ABOUT TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES

Misunderstanding the path of totality is the biggest mistake people make when discussing total solar eclipses. As excitement builds, confused phrases like “99% total eclipse” or “almost total” are used to convey the incorrect idea that a location will see most of a total solar eclipse. “Avoiding the crowds” for a 95% eclipse is another popular, but ignorant tactic. However, a 99% eclipse is still a partial eclipse. There s not totality — the sky does not go dark and the sun’s corona does not appear. That distinction is everything. On Aug. 12, major cities like Madrid and Barcelona will experience deep partial phases — extremely close to total — but will ultimately miss totality entirely.

how the ‘map of nope’ works

“The point of the map is that a 99 percent partial solar eclipse equals zero percent total solar eclipse,” said Zeiler. “A common misconception is that if someone is close to the path of totality, even in the zone of 99% partial solar eclipse, then that person doesn’t need to travel and will see most of the eclipse phenomena.” The appeal of the “Map of Nope” — which was popularized ahead of the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, across North America — is that it uses humor to explain that if you are not in the path of totality, you do not see or experience any part of a total solar eclipse. The stark difference between even a 99.999% partial solar eclipse and totality is why eclipse-chasers travel thousands of miles to stand in the right place at the right time.

WHY AUGUST’S TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE IS UNUSUAL

The path of totality on Aug. 12, 2026, stretches across the Arctic, Iceland and northern Spain, bringing totality within reach of millions of people across Europe. It also offers a variety of viewing experiences. In eastern Greenland, the sun will be relatively high, giving a clearer view of the sky during totality. In western Iceland, it will occur in the late afternoon, often framed by dramatic coastal landscapes. In northern Spain, the eclipse will occur near sunset, with the sun just a few degrees above the horizon — creating the possibility of a spectacular “sunset eclipse,” in which the corona glows above distant hills or the sea. That low angle adds drama, but also risk. A single cloud bank of cloud or a distant ridge could block the view entirely, making location choice critical. Eclipse chasers are using resources like The Eclipse App, SunsetAtlas, Eclipse Horizon , Instituto Geográfico Nacional and TPE, all of which can help make sure they’ll be able to see the eclipse from specific places. Either way, it’s critical to understand that to experience totality, you must be inside the path of totality. Not near it. Not close to it. Inside it.

north america’s view of the solar eclipse

The moon’s dark central shadow — called the umbra — will miss North America. Its wider outer shadow, however, will sweep across northern parts of the continent, creating a partial solar eclipse from Alaska through the northern states and into New England. Alaska will have the deepest U.S. eclipse, with about 37% of the sun covered in Fairbanks at 8:27 a.m. AKDT. Maine will receive the strongest view in the contiguous U.S., reaching about 28% partial eclipse at around 1:50 p.m. EDT. Eclipse glasses will be required throughout. Aug. 12’s solar eclipse will be modest by comparison with the total solar eclipses that crossed the U.S. in 2017 and 2024. However, millions of people will be able to take part in an event whose central path will briefly turn day to twilight across parts of Europe and the Arctic.
