UFC CEO Dana White had teased a huge event on Mexican Independence Day in 2024 at the Las Vegas Sphere on February 21. On Saturday night at UFC Fight Night in Mexico City, the event was made official.
There are no fights announced for the event, but based on White’s comments on ESPN MMA, the UFC matchmakers will do everything in their power to make the card something special.
Here’s a look at the interview when the event was first discussed.
White indicated the fight will feature many of the top Mexican fighters in the promotion. Yair Rodriguez, Brian Ortega, Brandon Royval and Brandon Moreno were all in action on Saturday in Mexico City.
The Sphere event will take place 6.5 months later which means that any of them could be available.
While Rodriguez fell short in his bout with Ortega in Mexico City, he’s still one of the most exciting fighters in the sport, and he’d still be considered a draw on Mexican Independence Day.
The same can be said for Royval or Moreno as well as current UFC Women’s Flyweight champion Alexa Grasso, who could defend her title before the Sphere event, and Irene Aldana, who is coming off a Fight of the Year-like performance in her last bout against Karol Rosa in December 2023.
Ortega pulled off a career-saving victory in the co-main event of UFC Mexico City, and a title shot against Ilia Topuria could be a strong main card bout.
Expect to see anticipation similar to what we’re experiencing ahead of UFC 300 as UFC 306 approaches.
