Unlocking Business Value From Your Data: How To Successfully Implement A Modern Data Platform

Dave Albano, President and CEO of RestorePoint.ai, has more than 35 years of technology industry leadership experience.

The business world is in the midst of a radical transformation. Conventional data analytics tools such as BI are no longer enough to keep organizations on the leading edge of innovation. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and more advanced data analytics have emerged at the center of digital interactions.

In this brave new world, businesses are turning to highly optimized and lightning-fast intelligence-driven frameworks. Generative AI, machine learning, predictive analytics and other digital tools drive precise, real-time decision-making. They democratize data and automate a wide range of processes.

Yet, getting to this advanced state—and harnessing the full power of data—often proves challenging and painful for organizations. For enterprises looking to implement a modern data platform, it is important to rethink and recalibrate infrastructure, data management methods, governance models, security, data privacy and more.

Along the way, there’s a need to address an array of strategic and tactical issues, including how to connect and interconnect streaming data, legacy data and third-party data; tap into data lake functionality; optimize real-time reporting and dashboards; and revamp and rewire processes and workflows. A successful approach can potentially lower costs, boost profitability and, in a best-case scenario, unlock innovation at scale.

Eliminating Data Dysfunction

Implementing a next-generation digital framework characterized by a composable application architecture represents a significant shift for businesses and is not without challenges. One of the most significant is the complexity of integrating diverse data types from multiple sources, which often leads to technical difficulties.

To effectively manage this, businesses should focus on developing a comprehensive data integration strategy, employing middleware tools and APIs for smoother integration. Additionally, coding challenges and data extraction problems are common hurdles. Here, leveraging low-code or no-code platforms can simplify development processes, and advanced data extraction tools can aid in efficient data retrieval from different sources.

Another area of concern is the management of data lakes, particularly in regulating structured and unstructured data. Addressing this issue involves implementing a solid data governance framework and utilizing data lake management software to organize and secure data efficiently.

Moreover, ensuring data security and staying compliant with regulatory requirements are critical aspects that businesses must proactively address. This can be achieved by adopting encryption and access controls and keeping abreast of regulatory changes to mitigate risks.

For a successful outcome, businesses should focus on agility and flexibility. Adopting a modular approach that allows quick adaptation to changing needs is key.

Deep Insights

As enterprises look to boost agility, flexibility and scalability, it’s wise to consider a managed data services approach anchored in composability. This model coordinates and streamlines data discovery, catalogs and curates it, and then configures the appropriate access controls. This can result in more efficient data extraction, advanced data exchange and pipeline capabilities, an effective data lakehouse, and improved governance and security.

A modern, composable data platform should allow business leaders to see and track all the crucial elements of a business. This can help deliver robust and highly scalable capabilities that steer clear of heavy investments in data scientists, disparate cloud tools, software and servers.

To successfully implement a modern data platform, focus on these four foundational pillars:

• The solution should be oriented on answering business questions and improving outcomes without the need to invest in data architects, engineers and cloud infrastructure experts.

• It should simplify and improve the data life cycle from acquisition and reporting to feeding applications and extracting actionable results with low-code, built-in connectors and composable data pipelines.

• A customer portal should be included to facilitate workflow management, tracking and reporting using APIs.

• Built-in data governance should implement sharing policies, clarify data stewardship, assess compliance, and report on and manage data across its entire life cycle.

A Model For Success

Today, more businesses are understanding the need to place data at the center of everything. It’s the currency of the digital age.

With a strategically approached modern data platform in place, the complexities of managing, securing and extracting maximum value from data can be diminished. Organizations can better pinpoint the data they need when they need it, evolve beyond inefficient legacy software and databases, adapt and change as conditions warrant, and eliminate staffing challenges and technical debt.
