Venom: The Last Dance surprised everyone with a new trailer that revealed that none other than Knull, God of the Symbiotes would be appearing in that film, which is something no one expected to see. There were theories that Sony may just be trying to drag out filmgoers for Knull when really he was just a post-credits tease or something, but that does not appear to be the case.
Knull’s creator, Donny Cates was making some joke-but-not-really-joke tweets about how as the creator, he hoped he was getting paid for Knull’s use, as sadly that often doesn’t happen as comic films take things from actual comics. But something seems to have changed as Cates has been brought into the fold, and is now raving about the film’s use of Knull, who seems to be much, much more involved than a simple cameo:
The original idea was that Toxin was the main villain of Venom: The Last Dance, but now it seems that he may be a secondary player to Knull himself.
There has been some measure of controversy about Knull showing up here and many, many theories about what that will translate into down the road. While this is the last Venom movie, the idea is that perhaps Sony is now getting its villain squad together, Venom, Morbius and Kraven, so far, to fight Knull as a Thanos-type figure in its own micro-Avengers team-up. Of course doing the entire thing without Spider-Man is goofy, but then again, this Sony non-Spider-Man Spider-Man universe has always been goofy. Also, you’ll notice I’m not mentioning Madame Web here as even Sony has said that is in an unrelated alternate timeline that will not connect to the others. Ouch.
Then, there have been additional rumors that this may be the final straw in how Sony’s Venom universe spills over into Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films in the MCU. There have long been rumors about Venom himself finally getting over there are Holland doing the whole symbiote arc. But now the idea is that Knull could be the one breaking that barrier during this current multiverse era, and stranger things have certainly happened with two other Spider-Men in the last film and FOX’s Wolverine now in the MCU, sort of. But you could argue those are value added while being attached to the mostly bad Venom-verse is a potential subtraction. I don’t think Disney wants Jared Leto’s Morbius anywhere near them, for instance. We’ll see how Kraven does.
It is, however, exciting that Knull will be showing up in some form and that his creator now seems excited about his role. Venom: The Last Dance arrives on October 25, 2024.
