Moreno, who is currently ranked No. 2, is trying to power his way back to a title shot. Erceg is on the same mission, though he may have a tougher trek ahead of him. While both men have fought and lost to current champion Alexandre Pantoja (Moreno has lost to him three times), Erceg has also been knocked out by Kai Kara-France, the man most believe will receive the next shot at the title.
Both Moreno and Erceg find themselves in must-win situations, but Erceg’s predicament is the most dire. He is currently on a two-fight losing streak. While he’s not in danger of being released, he is faced with potentially falling so far in the rankings that it makes earning a title shot a near-impossible mission.
Erceg will come into the fight on Saturday ranked No. 8, but a win would vault him into the Top 5.
Besides the compelling main event, we’ll also see the always-exciting Drew Dober face Manuel Torres in the co-main event. Any fight with Dober has a chance to earn a performance bonus.
Likewise, the Kelvin Gastelum vs. Joe Pyfer bout has as much sudden-KO potential as any fight on the card. Gastelum says he is officially done competing at welterweight, so he should be as comfortable as we’ve ever seen him at 185 pounds.
Few middleweights have as much pure power as Pyfer, and something tells me Gastelum will be in the pocket putting his striking prowess to the test.
Looking for the top-notch prospects on the card? Raul Rosas Jr. will open the main card with one of the toughest matchups he’s had in his young career. Rosas clashes with Vince Morales, a veteran who could be fighting for his UFC life.
He comes into the fight on a two-fight losing streak, and he’s been handed hot prospects in back-to-back bouts. In February, he lost a unanimous decision to recent Dana White Contender Series standout Elijah Smith.
