Why New iPhone Software Update Is Tracking For Early July

Why New iPhone Software Update Is Tracking For Early July

Now Apple has announced the next software cycle for iPhone, iOS 27, coming this fall, it’s likely that there’ll only be one more major-point update to the current iOS 26. And it looks like it might arrive sooner than last year’s timetable suggested.

The equivalent release last year, iOS 18.6, went on general release on July 29, 2025 and, since Apple is a creature of habit, it would be fair to assume the same sort of date would see the release of iOS 27.

However, there’s evidence that contradicts this.

How The iOS 26.6 Beta Schedule Compares To Last Year

The first developer beta of iOS 18.6 went live on June 16 last year. However, iOS 26.6 was made available to developers on May 26, three weeks earlier. Both this year and last, the first public beta hit two days later.

That doesn’t mean the general release will be quite as early as that, though.

On Monday, June 15, Apple released the second developer beta of iOS 26.6, exactly 15 days earlier than last year’s June 30 release of the iOS 18.6 second developer beta.

So, the lead has dropped from three weeks to just over two. Even so, if this cadence continues, it suggests that the final release could be earlier than it was in 2025.

New iPhone Features Discovered In iOS 26.6

As to what’s in the release, so far the betas haven’t revealed much. Of course, at this stage in the game it’s unlikely that there will be much in the way of major new features — anything really big would likely be held over to iOS 27.

However, the initial releases show one change, affecting how many contacts you can block. This is in the first and second developer and public betas.

A new alert, called Blocked Contacts Limit Reached, appears if you’ve blocked too many contacts. It’s not yet clear what the maximum will be but reports suggest it’s in the thousands.

Another feature, found in code for the new betas, suggests Apple is working on a new system to protect your iPhone if it’s snatched out of your hand, using the gyroscope and other hardware to spot that it’s been grabbed. To be clear, it’s not certain this will appear in iOS 26.6 or if the discovered code is in readiness for later release. More details of this here.

Predicted iOS 26.6 Release Date

Will Apple keep the software ahead of schedule, or will it slow down? I think there’s a strong chance the momentum will continue. In which case, unlike the July 29 general release, this year the update could land as soon as Monday, July 13, less than a month away.
