It was one of Netflix’s most popular True Crime shows in quite a while, but now Worst Ex Ever has been dethroned by…more murder. But fictional murder, this time. Nicole Kidman’s The Perfect Couple is now #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list, and because of her star power, it may stay there for a while.
The Perfect Couple is a limited series based on a book by Elin Hilderbrand from 2018, the story of a wedding day murder that occurs within a wealthy family in Nantucket. It’s got a very solid cast, Kidman, Liev Schreiber as her husband, Eve Hewson as the bereaved bride and the guy who got burned alive in the bear costume in Midsommer, Jack Reynor.
Unfortunately, like many shows that make it to #1 on Netflix, it’s not very good. It currently has a 54% among critics and a 55% audience score. Personally, I could tell from the jump this was going to be a worse-quality version of Kidman’s Big Little Lies and I could not make it through the first episode. I walked after about 30 minutes or so. They were even doing the same “interview people out of context before we know who was murdered” thing as that show.
That said, it should probably stay on top for a while. Worst Ex Ever stayed at #1 for a while despite only being four episodes, which is impressive. There is a 100% chance this returns for more seasons like most of Netflix’s other themed True Crime shows, and I’m sure there are a lot of other murderous exes out there.
Jeff Goldblum’s Kaos is at #3, and has not made it above #2 in the US so far. That’s reviewed pretty well and seems well-liked by audiences as a modern-day interpretation of Greek Mythology.
Former #1s The Accident, Laci Peterson and Emily in Paris are now down to #5, ##6 and #8 respectively. AMC’s Dark Winds continues to do incredibly well, still hanging on inside the Top 10, as are A Discovery of Witches and Mayfair Witches, two other well-performing AMC programs, indicating this was a really good deal for Netflix to make with that channel. AMC has been struggling a bit in recent years, so this seems like it’s probably going to be a boon for them given how well these shows are performing, which may induce Netflix to pay more to run them in the future.
I’m not sure I’m too wild about any of the current offerings on the list. The best one is definitely Dark Winds, the Native American murder mystery that I recommend everyone watch. Go do it.
