Flakiness has a bad reputation, and usually it deserves one. Nobody enjoys the friend who confirms twice and cancels an hour out, or the collaborator who vanishes mid-project. But the label gets applied broadly, and it tends to flatten two very different things: people who never intended to follow through, and people who followed through on their thinking instead.
That second group is easy to misread. What looks like a lack of commitment is often the opposite — a willingness to keep evaluating a decision after it’s been made, rather than coasting on a choice made by an earlier, less-informed version of yourself. Research on cognitive ability points consistently in this direction: the traits that track with intelligence are less about grinding harder and more about knowing when a plan has stopped being worth the effort.
Here are two habits that read as flaky from the outside and, more often than people assume, signal the opposite.
Habit 1: They Back Out Of Plans They’ve Already Agreed To
The socially approved script says a yes is a yes. Once it’s on the calendar, you go — tired, overextended, quietly dreading it. Reliability, in this telling, means treating your past commitments as binding no matter what has changed since.
People with strong cognitive control tend to treat a yes differently: as a prediction rather than a contract. When they agreed to Thursday, they were forecasting a version of Thursday that hasn’t arrived. But then, the deadline moved, or the week got heavier, or something more pressing or urgent came up. In this case, withdrawing isn’t a failure of character, it’s an updated forecast.
Psychologists study this under the heading of goal disengagement, and a 2025 study published in Nature Human Behaviour — a synthesis of 235 studies and more than 1,400 effect sizes — backs up the pattern, with a precise twist: letting go of a stalled goal reliably eases the stress and anxiety that come with grinding on, but the real wellbeing boost shows up specifically in people who take the next step and redirect that energy into something new.
There’s an autonomy dimension here too. Self-determination theory — one of the most durable frameworks in motivation research — holds that the quality of what people do depends heavily on whether it feels chosen rather than owed. Someone attending out of pure obligation is physically present and cognitively absent. Bowing out honestly is often the more respectful option, though it rarely feels that way to the person being canceled on.
Habit 2: They Leave Things Unfinished Without Much Guilt
The second habit is harder to defend at a dinner party. Someone starts learning the new language, the new instrument, the side business, the manuscript — and then, somewhere around the halfway mark, they stop. Not with a crisis. They simply learned what they wanted to learn and moved on.
Conventional wisdom calls this a discipline problem. And sometimes it is. But cognitive scientists describe a different mechanism at work: the explore–exploit tradeoff, the constant calculation about whether to keep mining a known option or go looking for a better one.
Exploring is expensive and looks unfocused from the outside. It’s also the only way new information enters a system. People with high curiosity tend to range more widely across options. Researchers call this a strong need for cognition, a trait first defined in a 1982 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology as the tendency to genuinely enjoy effortful thinking. This exploration comes with a cost: the more territory you cover, the more you leave unfinished.
Quitting also requires ignoring one of the most reliable biases in behavioral science. The sunk cost effect describes the pull to keep investing in something because of what you’ve already put in, even when the remaining returns are poor — a pattern well-established for money, and one that a 2023 study published in the International Review of Social Psychology found holds for time as well, though somewhat less consistently.
And unfinished doesn’t always mean abandoned. A 2025 preregistered study published in Scientific Reports found that stepping away from a problem improves the eventual solution specifically when the mind is left free to wander during the break, rather than resting or continuing to consciously chew on it. Some of what looks like giving up is simply resting.
