AI Agents Are About To Reshape The Future Of Business

The world of business and commerce stands on the brink of a radical shift, driven by the emergence and adoption of AI agents.

I’ve already looked at how this latest generation of autonomous, problem-solving AIs will change the way we work and transform many jobs.

But many believe their disruptive impact will go even further, fundamentally reshaping the way organizations operate, innovate and grow.

It’s not just about taking over human jobs or improving efficiency; agents have the potential to unlock new business models and redefine the way products and services are delivered.

Most importantly for today’s business leaders, this technology offers real opportunities (and risks) for agile, innovative organizations that can pivot quickly and effectively to agentic business models.

So what exactly are agents, how will this happen, and how do you make sure your business ends up on the winning side? Let’s take a look.

AI Agents—The Next Generation Of Business AI

AI is already changing the world, and the evidence is all around us; from the emergence of machine learning that powers businesses like Amazon and Google, to generative AI tools like ChatGPT that can automate many aspects of information work.

AI agents are a further leap forward. Rather than just predicting, analyzing and generating information, they take action.

Some simple examples: In marketing, machine learning segments users and predicts behavior, meaning businesses can offer personalization and recommendations. Generative AI creates campaign assets like ads and emails. And now agentic AI can deliver that content, track responses, send follow-ups, and iteratively optimize itself for future campaigns.

In retail, machine learning forecasts demand, generative AI produces inventory lists and orders, and now agentic AI will place those orders autonomously, negotiate with suppliers, track shipments, and autonomously allocate stock and resources to where they are needed.

Of course, there’s a huge amount of hype around agentic AI, mainly created by companies trying to sell it. But beyond the buzzwords, I believe the potential is clear: Agentic AI will help organizations move towards truly autonomous, intelligent and connected business models.

How Will Agentic AI Transform Businesses?

AI agents will redefine organizations on many levels. Most obviously, this means creating more efficient processes and freeing up the time of human workers for higher-value work.

It will handle scheduling, reporting, data entry and many other elements of information-based working. This will include efficiently allocating resources, compliance and regulatory monitoring and many administrative tasks.

While this will certainly be valuable, its real impact will be in creating new opportunities for innovation just as machine learning allowed businesses like Amazon and Netflix to create entirely new models based on prediction and personalization.

In other words, it won’t just let companies do what they already do, but better, it will let them do things that simply weren’t possible before.

Financial services, for example, might use agents to proactively scan markets for investment opportunities, autonomously execute trades, and balance portfolios, all while also managing compliance and risk.

In healthcare, agents might be tasked with coordinating patient care across numerous services, continuously staying up-to-date on relevant studies around treatment and medication, and autonomously tracking and responding to pandemics and public health issues.

And in manufacturing, they could manage production operations end-to-end, identifying risks that could create inefficiencies or bottlenecks before they occur, and dynamically adjusting schedules and processes as order books, inventory levels or situations demand.

In those industries and many others, the idea is that this will give humans more time to focus on strategy, interpersonal communications, creativity and other things that we are still unquestionably better at than machines.

Truly Autonomous Organizations

For businesses, agentic AI represents the opportunity to move beyond automating knowledge work and decision-making, towards automating action.

This means identifying goals and the steps that must be taken to achieve them, identifying and interacting with third-party, external systems that can help it do so, and driving processes towards completion without waiting for human authorization or interaction.

Of course, this presents some pretty heavy risks. Understanding where human oversight remains essential and implementing safeguards will be a critical skill for business leadership in the coming decades. Those capable of implementing and managing these systems will find themselves increasingly in demand.

Taken together, these shifts redefine the concept of the “intelligent enterprise”—long considered the goal of business automation—from simply using information to make better decisions, to taking smarter and more impactful actions.

In short, this means businesses that don’t just know more, but can do more, will become drivers of innovation and emerge as leaders in the agentic era. For business leaders of today, this is probably the biggest opportunity of all.
