Apple Announces New AirTag With 50% Better Range And A Louder Speaker

Apple has unveiled its next-generation AirTag. It features the same Apple Ultra Wideband chip as the recent iPhone 17 lineup, the lightweight iPhone Air, the Apple Watch Ultra 3, and the Apple Watch Series 11. This allows it to expand its findability range and work with more Apple devices than before. The new item-finder makes it quicker and easier to locate lost items.

First launched in 2021, the original AirTag has been the most reliable item-finder for many travelers, including me. I use it to track my luggage through airports around the world and love the on-screen directions (Precision Finding) to locate my bags at luggage belts. It makes my travel life easier. The second-generation AirTag improves on this functionality by doubling down on range, Bluetooth chip upgrade and other quality-of-life improvements.

The new AirTag can help you find lost items from up to 50% farther away than the previous generation. Apple says it has updated the AirTag’s internal design to add an improved speaker, which, again, is claimed to be 50% louder than the previous generation. However, the upgrades are housed in the same design as before so the new AirTag is compatible with all of Apple’s existing AirTag accessories.

With the new item tracker, Apple is adding Precision Finding support to your Apple Watch (Series 9 or later and Watch Ultra 2 or later). For context, Precision Finding uses haptic, audio, and visual feedback to lead users to their lost items – and now you can use this functionality on your Apple Watch.

“The new AirTag is designed from the ground up to keep location data private and secure. AirTag doesn’t physically store location data or history on device, and end-to-end encryption protects all communication with the Find My network, ensuring that only the owner of a device can access its location data,” said Apple in a press release.

The second-generation AirTag costs the same as its predecessor. You can buy one $29 / INR 3,730 and a pack of four for $99 / INR 12,900.

The new AirTag is now available to order on the Apple Store app. It’ll be made available through Apple Store locations later this week.
