Fujifilm just dropped a solid hint that a new Instax Wide camera will soon be released, in a teaser post earlier today from the official @instaxhq Instagram account.
The post features a single image containing a selection of user comments expressing eagerness for a new wide format model in Fujifilm’s tremendously popular instant camera range. Along the image a caption reads, “So we hear you wanna go WIDE, huh?”, suggesting that a new Wide model will be announced imminently.
Instax wide is the largest available Instax format, producing prints twice as big as those taken by the popular Instax Mini range. Because Instax Wide photos are 99mm by 62mm in size rather than the 46mm by 62mm of the Instax Mini range, they capture significantly more detail than the smaller format. However, the camera bodies are also significantly larger. This makes them better suited to those who value picture quality over the convenience of a smaller camera.
Instax Mini recently received a new flagship model, in the form of the new Instax Mini 99, but the Wide range hasn’t been updated since 2014’s Instax Wide 300, now ten years old, so the format is well overdue for an update. The Instax range covers a wide selection of cameras, both analog and digital, with a varying selection of features from point-and-shoot to more advanced models with manual control.
The current Instax Wide 300 is an analog device with a good selection of controls and a detachable close-up lens attachment. However, no details about the new camera are available at this stage, so it’s not known whether it might be a direct replacement for the existing model or something entirely different. For now, all eyes are on Fujifilm for an imminent Instax Wide release.
