Google’s Update Mistake—Millions Of Pixel Phones Now At Risk

Here we again. More bad news for Google’s Pixel users as more update mistakes come to light. Following various update issues before the holidays, it seems January is bringing even more. The world of Pixel is crying out for some stability.

“I’m frustrated by this,” Android Central says, having scanned online forums where Pixel owners are lamenting their latest update woes. “Pixel 10 users report major Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues.” Bottom line: “January hasn’t been kind, as Pixel 10 users already grappled with a Play Services update that made everything sluggish.”

Pixel updates had seemed so much better than this. It was Samsung users looking enviously at Pixel owners as they suffered long One UI upgrade delays for the latest iteration of Android, or even the convoluted routes each month to getting security fixes.

But January’s Pixel update was later than usual and now seems to be causing issues when it lands. Prior these latest reports and posts, it had seemed that the Play System background update was the culprit, not the regular monthly OS software fixes.

Android Central says user complaints include that “Bluetooth ‘no longer turns on,’ and they’re struggling with Wi-Fi.” There are also complaints that “Internet setting freezes in the settings app. It’ll eventually load, but not able to successfully turn on wifi or show any networks to connect to.” Nothing terminal, just painful bugs.

While late, millions of Pixel owners will have now installed the January update. All those phones now risk these issues. Google has not responded or confirmed what’s affecting these phones. Keep an eye on your device and be prepared for some of this to affect you. One would expect a remedy fairly quickly, albeit it could be February’s update that resolves all this given how later we are into January now.

At this point, 9to5Google says, “the issue doesn’t seem to be affecting everyone, but it’s far from a limited issue as we’re seeing a considerable number of user reports over the past few days from devices including Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and others.”

“From the timeline we’ve seen,” Android Central says, “it appears that Google’s January security patch could be the culprit. The patch arrived on January 13, and these patches usually take a little while to make their rounds and hit every device.”

The website adds that “users with two generations of Pixels (10 and 9) were already reporting problems after a Google Play Services update. Users claimed their devices were booting up slowly and that the Pixel Launcher was unresponsive at times.”
