Sony has announced a last-minute State of Play, creeping in at the end of May here, which is meant to show off a number of PS5 and PSVR2 titles, 14 in all.
That showcase, announced only yesterday, will air today, Thursday May 30, at 3 PM PT, 6 PM ET on YouTube, Twitch and uh, TikTok. Here’s what Sony has to say about what’s coming:
“State of Play is back! Tune in live for updates on PS5 and PS VR2 titles, plus a look at PlayStation Studios games arriving later this year. The 30+ minute show features 14 titles.”
Yeah that’s it. That’s all they have to say about it. 14 games in 30 minutes with transitions is probably no more than 90 seconds a game or so, so this is not going to be a huge showcase for any one game in particular.
As for the PlayStation Studios games “arriving later this year” the options are somewhat limited for what those might be and it’s not going to be anything too big, as we know things like Ghost of Tsushima 2 or new Santa Monica or Naughty Dog games much further away. There were some reports that Insomniac’s Wolverine game may make it out in fall 2024, but A) that does not seem plausible and B) it does not seem likely it would get enough of a spotlight in a 30 minute showcase alongside 13 other games.
Sony just reported solid PlayStation earnings, saying this is the most profitable PS generation so far. It is expanding its horizons with releases of its live games on both console and PC at once, like Helldivers, and putting its bigger first party games on PC eventually which it believe will drive console sales in the long term. Still, Sony is struggling with increasingly massive budgets and we’ve seen a few higher profile live games fall apart on them as they pursue this strategy.
For the State of Play today, it’s just a bit hard to expect anything too massive to come from it. This is not a full E3-style showcase, but a smaller scale event, so manage your expectations accordingly.
