Hints And Answer For Monday, October 13

Well that went by fast. I’m a big proponent in a general societal shift away from the two-day weekend. Three-day weekends are where it’s at. 32 hour work weeks. More leisure time or time to work side hustles / projects. More time for hobbies and family and friends. More time to travel and do meaningful things with our hard-earned cash. Not that any of that applies to me, since I work seven days a week! Of course, I spread my work out at all times of the day and week. I haven’t had a “normal” schedule in well over a decade. I don’t know if that’s good for my scattered brain or bad, but I can dig it. Can you dig this Wordle? Let’s give it a shot.

Looking for Sunday’s Wordle? Check out our guide right here.

How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
  • Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Today’s Wordle Hints And Answer

Wordle Bot’s Starting Word: SLATE

My Starting Word Today: CHORE (35 words remaining)

The Hint: Hirsute

The Clue: This Wordle has two vowels in a row.

Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming!

The Answer:

Wordle Bot Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

CHORE was a great opening guess, leaving me with just 35 remaining words. SLAIN only slashed that down to 4 unfortunately, and the first thing I came up with was BEARD. In retrospect, had I thought a little longer, I might have guessed TEARY or WEARY but that’s what I had and that’s what I typed in and lucky for me, that was the Wordle! (Go team beard!)

Competitive Wordle Score

The Bot and I tied, so we get 0 for that, but we each get 1 point for guessing in three, bringing our October totals up a notch. I’m having a much better month than the last two (three?) thank goodness.

Erik: 11 points

Wordle Bot: 6 point

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word beard comes from Old English beard, meaning “hair of the chin or face,” which in turn derives from Proto-Germanic bardaz (also seen in Old High German bart, Old Norse barð). These all trace back to the Proto-Indo-European root bhardhā- or bhr̥dʰ- meaning “beard” or “bristle.” The word has remained remarkably stable across Indo-European languages — compare Latin barba and Greek poggón (from a related root).
