Hints, Answers For Friday, September 19

Each day’s game of NYT Connections Sports Edition goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today’s Connections Sports Edition hints and answers, here’s what you missed on Thursday:

Happy Friday, sports fans! Today’s NYT Connections Sports Edition hints and answers for Friday, September 19 are coming right up.

How To Play NYT Connections Sports Edition

Connections Sports Edition is a free daily New York Times game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day and you can play on the NYT website. It works just like the regular Connections game, except everything is sports-related.

You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like teams in a certain city, athletes who won Olympic gold in a certain discipline or just about anything else. There might be wordplay involved too, so be careful!

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and there are often red herrings. You can shuffle the words around too. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is typically the most difficult one.

If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you’ll see a message telling you you’re one away from getting it right. As with Wordle and similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s NYT Connections Sports Edition answers.

NYT Connections Sports Edition Hints

Scroll slowly! I’ll first give you a list of today’s Connections Sports Edition words, then a hint for each category. After that, I’ll reveal one word that goes into each group. Then I’ll tell you the category names, followed by the full answers.

Here’s what the grid looks like:

Today’s 16 words and logos are…

  • MAGIC
  • JAZZ
  • WIZARDS

  • MEDICAL TENT
  • CAMP RANDALL
  • THUNDER
  • BENCHES
  • SPARTAN
  • HEAT
  • BULLS
  • UNC
  • COACHES
  • CHAINS

The hints for today’s Connections Sports Edition categories are:

  • 🟨 Yellow group — next to the gridiron field
  • 🟩 Green group — there’s usually more than one on the court
  • 🟦 Blue group — where one of the GOATs plied his trade
  • 🟪 Purple group — like SECU, Kinnick and Autzen

One Answer For Each Connections Sports Edition Category

Need some extra help?

Be warned, we’re seriously starting to get into spoiler territory now.

Here is one correct answer for each of the four groups:

  • 🟨 Yellow group — MEDICAL TENT
  • 🟩 Green group — MAGIC
  • 🟦 Blue group — WIZARDS
  • 🟪 Purple group — BEAVER

NYT Connections Sports Edition Groups

Today’s Connections Sports Edition groups are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — things seen on an NFL sideline
  • 🟩 Green group — NBA teams with singular names
  • 🟦 Blue group — teams Michael Jordan played for
  • 🟪 Purple group — Big Ten stadiums

NYT Connections Sports Edition Answers

Final spoiler alert! I’m about to reveal today’s NYT Connections Sports Edition answers.

Scroll slowly!

This is your absolute last chance to back out.

Today’s NYT Connections Sports Edition answers are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — things seen on an NFL sideline (BENCHES, CHAINS, COACHES, MEDICAL TENT)
  • 🟩 Green group — NBA teams with singular names (HEAT, JAZZ, MAGIC, THUNDER)
  • 🟦 Blue group — teams Michael Jordan played for (BARONS, BULLS, UNC, WIZARDS)
  • 🟪 Purple group — Big Ten stadiums (BEAVER, CAMP RANDALL, OHIO, SPARTAN)

Lots of NBA teams on the grid today, and I fell into the red herring trap. I didn’t get anything today. Although I watched The Last Dance, I don’t know Jordan’s career well enough to know he played for the BARONS or UNC.

I have absolutely no idea about college sports, so the purples were out of range for me. I’ve also never heard of a MEDICAL TENT being on the sidelines during NFL games, though I am aware of what the chains are for.

That brings my three-day streak to an end. Hoping for better luck tomorrow!

That’s all there is to it for today’s NYT Connections Sports Edition clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Saturday’s game if you need them.

Follow my blog for more coverage of NYT Connections Sports Edition, the regular version of Connections and other word games, and even occasional video game news, insights and analysis.
