How Connectivity Is Reimagining The Race Weekend

Brendan O’Reilly is CEO, Europe & Asia at Boldyn Networks.

Motorsport has long been a frontier for technical innovation and engineering endeavors. Its relentless pursuit of marginal gains has advanced aerodynamics for greater fuel efficiency, created safer tire technologies, pioneered real-time telemetry data use and revolutionized how carbon fiber is engineered.

From vehicle design and rich data-led broadcasting to the awe-inspiring split-second decision-making by drivers, pit crews and teams, there is much to admire.

Now, one of the major trends shaping racing circuits is amplifying the race weekend experience with connected tracks and more immersive ecosystems for fans, broadcasters, racing teams and the operational teams who make it happen.

Why The Race Weekend Has Become A Digital Experience

At race weekends, the digital and physical worlds increasingly mingle. Each circuit has its own rhythm and pressure points created by hundreds of thousands of people using several connected devices across the venue. Every part of the circuit must operate as one coordinated environment, with digital connectivity infrastructure as the core engine.

While the sound, speed and drama of motorsport will always be physical, the way people experience it is becoming more digital. This is not about replacing the atmosphere but removing any friction to help deepen the spectacle.

Let’s say you’re in the stands at Turn 3, but you want to see what’s happening at Turn 12. Or you want to check the gap between first and second, understand the tire strategy or watch that overtake again. You want to see if Lewis has enough battery to take Kimi on.

Few sports offer such a compelling opportunity to turn live data into drama.

Formula 1 already recognizes that value, and through its work with AWS, F1 Insights translates complex race information into graphics such as Pit Stop Strategy, Time Lost and Track Dominance. Each F1 car now carries 300 sensors, generating more than 1.1 million telemetry data points per second, which can be used to interpret performance in real time.

Fans love those insights, and better connectivity at circuits brings them reliably beyond big screens to the devices in people’s hands. Apps and services for personalized wayfinding, live data and real-time scheduling at circuits around the world are a very clear indicator that the sport is shifting to more informed, responsive and personalized experiences across venues.

Addressing The Increasing Demand For Connectivity At Races

A Grand Prix weekend can bring hundreds of thousands of fans to a racing venue, creating a level of connectivity demand that would challenge many permanent networks in busy urban areas.

To solve this, a few racing venues are exploring ways to create permanent connectivity that gives circuits a platform to keep building on, race after race. Earlier this year, as one example of this shift, my company partnered with Silverstone, the British Grand Prix venue, to deploy a permanent high-capacity 5G mobile network.

These types of projects move the circuit away from reliance on seasonal, temporary infrastructure and toward one built to evolve. The goal is to help fans share content, follow live race updates, access event information and stay connected throughout the venue.

Temporary digital infrastructure is designed to cope, but the future of motor racing is heading toward permanent infrastructure that is designed to evolve.

Enhancing The Engine Room

Behind the racing circuits is a choreography of safety teams, marshals, medics, broadcasters, hospitality staff, vendors, security teams, transport and venue operators. When great connectivity underpins this environment, those teams can make better decisions quickly.

Shared infrastructure is critical in activating multiple operators across the same network, improving coverage and capacity without separate overlays or overbuilding.

Private 5G can also create dedicated operational networks for staff communications, connected cameras, sensors, asset tracking and digital signage.

And edge-enabled video can allow teams to watch, monitor and operate live high-resolution feeds with extremely low latency.

These factors can enable smoother fan experiences, data-rich broadcasts, better venue operations and stronger situational awareness for safety response.

The best technology in this environment is the kind that people barely notice. What they want is to be able to message their group or move through the venue without a fuss.

How Partnership Will Define This New Era

There is often a lot of talk about how collaboration drives great outcomes. Partnership at racing circuits involves a shared effort between venue owners, mobile operators, neutral-host providers, rights holders, racing series, teams, broadcasters, public safety bodies, local authorities and technology partners.

The challenges are technical, commercial, operational and human. So, a variety of strengths from across the ecosystem are required. The best partnerships will start with the outcome they want to deliver. How should fans feel when they arrive? What do operational teams need to see? Where are the pressure points? How can infrastructure support both the biggest race weekend of the year and the quieter, year-round life of the venue?

That last point is important. Circuits aren’t solely places that come alive for a handful of headline events. Many are year-round destinations for conferences, corporate experiences, testing, hospitality and community activity. Connectivity can help them become more flexible and more commercially resilient.

Securing Pole Position

Motorsport understands better than most that performance is built in layers. It is rarely one dramatic invention but is rather a series of improvements working together.

A great circuit will still be judged by the iconic races that it has hosted. But increasingly, it will also be judged by how well it moves people, information and decisions around a complex environment in real time. Connectivity is unlikely to be the most visible part of motorsport’s next chapter. But it could certainly become one of the most important ones.
