This last week Micron announced that it would discontinue its Crucial consumer products brand and focus its efforts on memory for the AI and data center markets by February 2026. The Crucial brand was started in 1996. This closes three decades of Micron selling into consumer markets.
Micron’s decision comes at a time when data center expansions to support AI workloads has caused shortages of all digital storage and memory products. Micron has been making headwinds in selling its high bandwidth memory, HBM, with stacks of DRAM in a package in the GPU market. It also comes after Micron’s memory fabrication expansion plans ran into some headwinds.
The shortages of storage and memory to support AI data center build-outs has caused price increases for every type of memory and storage technology. Many of the hyperscale data center companies are making contracts with suppliers, like Micron, to purchase these technologies well into the future. This is causing increased prices for consumer products which use these memory and storage technologies and it is also making it harder to supply the consumer market.
Sumit Sadana, EVP and Chief Business Officer at Micron said that the “surging demand for memory and storage solutions in the AI-driven data center market” is behind this decision. Micron and other solid state memory companies have generally supported both consumer and enterprise customers even though consumer products generally have lower profit margins. It will be interesting to see if other memory companies follow suit.
Another factor in Micron’s decision may be that it’s plans for factory expansion to provide more memory production at its Clay, NY megafab have run into 2-3 year construction delays due to a combination of labor shortages and supply chain complications. The first of these facilities is now pushed out to open in late 2030.
Micron is also building a new semiconductor fab in Boise, Idaho. It may be that the slower expansion of its memory production capacity in the near future was another reason for Micron to exit the consumer market in favor of the more lucrative enterprise and data center market.
Micron’s exit will leave a considerable hole in the consumer DRAM and NAND flash memory business. Overall Micron is the third largest supplier of DRAM behind Samsung and SK hynix. On the other hand, Micron’s exit from the consumer market should strengthen the market share of Samsung, Sandisk and other companies for DRAM and NAND flash based products.
Some milestone’s in Crucial’s consumer product history include:
- 1996: Crucial Technology was founded, allowing everyday consumers to buy memory upgrades direct from a major manufacturer.
- 2008: The first Crucial-branded SSD was debuted with capacities up to 64GB.
- 2013: Crucial was a pioneer in introducing DDR4 memory technology to the market.
- 2018: The P1 series SSD was launched, setting new performance benchmarks for consumer products.
Micron announced that it will exit the consumer memory business by February 2026 and focus on the more lucrative enterprise and data center markets.
