Microsoft Outlook is currently down due to an unknown outage affecting millions of users this morning. As people start the beginning of their day, whether it be checking their email at home over breakfast or getting into the office, it really couldn’t have come at a worse time. Users are reporting issues where they are being informed that they do not have a valid license to use the service, while others say the email service is available but running painfully slowly. According to DownDetector, the majority of reports are concerning an inability to log in to Microsoft Outlook, representing 62% of all issues.
Microsoft Outlook Down – Cause As Yet Unknown
There will, of course, be speculation that the Microsoft Outlook outage is cyberattack related, but the reality is likely to be more mundane. In June, for example, Microsoft confirmed that the reason for Outlook email crashing was “because Outlook cannot open the Forms Library.” Although the reason for this outage remains unknown at the time of publication, it’s important not to fear the worst.
After all, even when it comes to security issues, Microsoft has something of a history of error-strewn updates causing problems. Everything from Windows Firewall issues, to Windows 11 security update notifications have been in the news recently.
Despite many publications rather bizarrely seemingly linking the current Microsoft Outlook outage to the announcement that the Microsoft Authenticator app will delete passwords in August, there is absolutely no reason to link the two events.
The Microsoft Office service health portal has confirmed that Microsoft Outlook is having issues, and the technology giant said that it is “working on it.” This is a developing story. I have reached out to Microsoft for more information and will update the article when any is available.
