Microsoft Stops Updates For Millions Of Windows Users—Here’s What You Do Now

Windows users have suddenly been hit with another update issue, stopping their PCs from installing the all-important Windows 11 24H2. This is the latest in a series of such setbacks, but fortunately this time around the fix is easy.

As spotted by Windows Latest, the update is “ruining” the colors on games and some other apps, with Microsoft confirming that “the Windows 11 24H2 bug causes incorrect game colors when you use the AutoHDR feature.”

This might seem trivial, but Microsoft has sledge-hammered the issue. “To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices that have enabled Auto HDR. These devices will not be offered to install Windows 11, version 24H2 via the Windows Update release channel.”

The fix is simple: ”You can prevent this issue by turning off Auto HDR on your device… Open the Start menu and go to Settings. Navigate to System > Display. Scroll down and select Graphics… Use the Default Settings control.”

If you want to be more selective you can do this game by game. In the meantime, the company recommends that you “do not attempt to manually update to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the media creation tool until this issue has been resolved.” You won’t see the Windows 11 24H2 update with AutoHDR on.

Per Windows Latest, “Microsoft understands that some of you might not realize that Auto HDR is turned on your PC, so the company has blocked the upgrade on PCs with Auto HDR turned on… Windows Latest reached out to Microsoft, and the company told us it’s working on a fix, which will be rolled out in the near future.”

There have been a range of other compatibility issues and other bugs for an update that some have billed as Windows 12 in all but name. Clearly users should ensure that updates are installed as soon as released, given the ongoing threat landscape.

Meanwhile, while you’re making changes, it’s a good time to look at your security settings given Microsoft’s plans to delete your password. Read more on that here.
