Oscar De La Hoya Releases Super-Low PPV Numbers For Garcia-Haney Fight

Oscar De La Hoya’s Clapback Thursday series has been a petty addition to the weekly flow of boxing-related content, but there are times when some exciting details come out of the head of Golden Boy’s short rants.

On the latest episode of CT, De La Hoya aimed at two of his favorite targets, Bill and Devin Haney. The Haneys are suing De La Hoya and Golden Boy for battery, fraud, and breach of contract.

According to De La Hoya, the Haneys have also asked to see his “books” as they don’t believe they were paid what they were owed.

De La Hoya says the fight only did “a little over 300,000” pay-per-view buys, indicating Devin was paid what he was owed. Here is a look at the clip that FightHype reposted on YouTube as it was no longer available on De La Hoya’s X account.

If De La Hoya’s total is correct, it shines a new light on PPV buys across boxing and combat sports. Comparatively, Jake Paul’s crossover boxing match against Nate Diaz is said to have produced 450,000 pay-per-view buys.

According to Tapology, the initial meeting between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury generated 310,000 PPV buys, while Canelo Alvarez’s fights reportedly blew those numbers out of the water.

Canelo, a significant figure in the boxing world, is one of De La Hoya’s most notable rivals. Their relationship, which began with De La Hoya promoting Canelo in the early stages of his career, took a bitter turn, leading to a highly publicized feud.

That said, Garcia, who is most seen as the fighter who replaced Canelo on De La Hoya’s GBP roster, is massively outperforming him in PPV buys.

According to Tapology, Canelo’s fight with Edgar Berlanga on September 14 generated 650,000 PPV buys. For Canelo to more than double the PPV buys generated by Haney-Garcia in a fight that most saw as a one-sided matchup is telling.

Did Garcia’s behavior leading up to the fight hurt the PPV buys? People were concerned about Garcia making the fight because he was behaving bizarrely.

Do Garcia and Haney lack star power despite their consistent presence on social media? Is Canelo such a big star that he will draw more than almost everyone else in the sport, no matter who he’s fighting?

Quite honestly, the answer is probably a mixture of all three things.

In any case, De La Hoya releasing the PPV buys might explain what the Haneys were paid, but it also suggests his current roster might be devoid of an actual PPV draw.

Other Boxing News – Regis Prograis vs. Jack Catterall

There’s no major boxing match on tap for the weekend. MMA is taking center stage with the PFL’s first SuperFights PPV and the UFC’s Fight Night at the Apex in Las Vegas.

However, there is an interesting 140-pound clash between former champion Regis Prograis and Jack Catterall. The fight will stream on DAZN and will take place in Manchester, England.

Prograis is coming off a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Haney, while Catterall defeated Josh Taylor in their rematch.
