The summer blockbuster season kicks off this weekend with The Fall Guy, a big action picture based on the 1980s TV series starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Gosling plays a stuntman that gets wrapped up in mystery that puts him in even more danger. This mayhem is directed by David Leitch, known for his work on John Wick, Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train.
Dungeons & Dragons players who want to play a game set in a world of fast chases, hard hitting action and ridiculous stunts should check out Outgunned. The Italian design firm Two Little Mice recently delivered the Kickstarter of this cinematic action game. The core books include everything players and Game Masters need for their own big budget blockbuster at the table.
Outgunned Rules
The Director’s Cut rules focus on players building pools of six sided dice. Rather than counting individual dice to see if they succeed, players look for dice matches from a pair to five of a kind. Sometimes the Game Master wants a big success, sometimes they might as for multiple pairs.
Characters are built from Roles and Tropes. These elements give characters their skills, their abilities and even a little bit of backstory. A player might build The Brain that’s a Free Spirit, The Agent who is Cool But Distressed or even The Nobody that’s secretly a Hunk.
Action heroes thrive on adrenaline and these characters are no different. Adrenaline is a pool of points thct can be used for extra dice or to power special abilities like being able to jump a car from one highway overpass to another while still being able to drive away. They also get access to Spotlight scenes where the players get to control the moment where the soundtrack swells up and the film slows down.
A World of Killers
Big action heroes need a big world to play in. Outgunned offers A World of Killers as their first campaign setting. It’s a world of lethal assassins inspired by games like Hitman and films like John Wick. There’s even a special role, The Assassin, for players who want to add some Assassin’s Creed into the mix.
The book includes rules for killer contracts, how to hunt prey and even how to try and walk away after a lifetime of killing. There’s also a full cinematic campaign in the book that drops the players into a world of murder and intrigue as various criminal families vie to become the head of a worldwide club of killers on call.
Action Flicks
Action isn’t contrained to just the modern world. Films like Aliens, Star Wars and Avengers fit the bill. Action Flicks contains rules and guidance for Outgunned players looking for some laser swords or classic kung-fu action.
This book also includes rules to emulate one of the most unlikely action movie hits of the past few years. For Game Masters who want punch their way across the multiverse, the Everything At Once chapter talks about how to jump through these settings from scene to scene. Sadly, there are no rules for hot dog fingers yet.
Outgunned Adventure
For fans of a certain whip-wielding archaeologist, Outgunned Adventure will bring artifacts and crumbling temples to the game this summer. The BackerKit is due to go live soon. The quickstart is available to see what new adventures might spin out of the first mega genre expansion for the game.
