Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 Review: Music Never Sounded This Clear

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 Review: Music Never Sounded This Clear

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds succeed the highly acclaimed True Wireless 3. Rather than opting for a redesign or adding over-the-top features, Sennheiser doubled down on improving sound quality and providing a more comprehensive feature set. The earbuds also feature an updated Qualcomm chipset, which is responsible for a bunch of upgrades. But do these stand out amongst the likes of Sony, Apple, and Bose earbuds?

Stylish And Comfortable To Wear

They retain the chunky form factor from previous models, especially when compared to Apple and Sony earbuds. The case feels too large for pant pockets, so I preferred keeping it in my bag during my commute. However, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds are stylish, premium, and classy.

I like the copper graphite color that offers a dual-tone finish on the earbuds and a timeless look to the case. The company also added an IP54 rating (an improvement over IPX4 on the Momentum True Wireless 3), which means they are now dust-resistant alongside being water-resistant.

Each earbud weighs 6.2 grams, slightly more than the 5.3-gram AirPods Pro. Despite this, I found them comfortable to wear for extended periods. I opted for the medium-sized ear tips, which provided a tight and secure seal. You get three more options to choose from. The earbuds feature touch controls, which are now more customizable through the app. Their ear-detection feature worked seamlessly; every time I removed an earbud, music paused instantly and resumed within a second of putting it back.

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 feature a Qualcomm 5-series chipset, which is more power efficient than before. As a result, you get up to 7.5 hours of continuous music playback. I didn’t feel the battery life was a problem at any moment in my one-month usage.

During my 8-hour flight from Paris to Delhi, I listened to music for approximately five hours with noise cancellation on at 70% volume. I had 20% battery left on the earbuds when I popped them back into the case. The case adds another 22.5 hours of battery life. Plus, you get a quick charge feature that gives you an hour of battery life from an 8-minute charge.

The Momentum True Wireless 4 now offer improved reliability, with no noticeable connection drop issues, which was a bothersome concern on the predecessors. The chipset upgrade also introduces features like LE Audio, a low-latency gaming mode, and Auracast support. I wasn’t able to test Auracast but in theory, it lets you share your audio with others by connecting your earbuds to public devices like a TV in the office room or at the gym.

Immaculate Sound Clarity

I like Sennheiser’s balanced sound signature on the headphones and earbuds, and the Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds are no exception. They support SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive/Lossless and LC3 codecs. The difference in sound qualtiy compared to the Momentum True Wireless 3 would be a tad more recognizable when you pair them with an Android phone that supports the said codecs. But that’s not to say that Apple’s AAC codec leaves you wanting for more.

I tested the Momentum True Wireless 4 with my iPhone 15 Pro and OnePlus 12. The 7mm drivers deliver a well-balanced sound, maintaining an even frequency response without favoring any particular range. The earbuds provide exceptional clarity and instrument separation in songs.

You’ll be able to pinpoint the sound of bright guitar strings and more buzzy synthesizers in all kinds of songs. The sound is clear and detailed with well-defined bass and comfortable highs (without sounding too sharp to the ears). I like the Momentum True Wireless 4 better than my AirPods Pro for listening to music that involves string instruments. I also liked listening to podcasts on these earbuds.

You can still tweak the sound to your liking with the EQ options within the Smart Control app, which also lets you create “sound zones” – for instance, you can create specific EQ and noise cancellation settings for your office, home, or gym. The sound mode will automatically kick on when in that location. The app offers a plethora of features and customization options.

Great Noise Cancellation With Passable Transparency Mode

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 offer improved noise cancellation performance compared to their predecessors. While I didn’t find myself missing my Sony XM5 earbuds on flights, I did notice a slight difference between the two, with the Sony earbuds offering slightly better noise cancellation performance.

The Transparency mode on the Momentum True Wireless 4 could be better. I found it more convenient to remove an earbud when talking to someone rather than pausing the music and relying on transparency mode, which I can do on the AirPods Pro.

The call quality has also been improved on the new Sennheiser earbuds with AI optimization. I had no issues with others hearing me clearly, even when I was outdoors.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 Review: Verdict

Priced at $300 (18,990 Indian Rupees), the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds offer excellent sound quality. However, they lag behind in terms of portability and transparency mode when compared to the AirPods Pro and Sony XM5 earbuds.

That being said, the Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds are an easy recommendation for their impeccable sound clarity. They are comfortable to wear, offer long battery life, and come loaded with features.
