‘Shogun’ Sweeps All Top Emmy Categories, Crushes ‘Game Of Thrones’ Record

Shogun was widely thought as potentially being able to sweep the Emmys in its nominated categories, and well, it essentially did. While losing a few surprising awards like Supporting Actor and Writing for a drama series, it won the top three categories in the show, Best Drama, Best Actor in a Drama and Best Actress in a Drama, in addition to Best Directing for Fredrick E.O. Toye.

Best Actor went to series star Hiroyuki Sanada and Best Actress to his opposite, Anna Sawai. Both were the first nominations and wins for each. Sawai in particular seemed to be the fan favorite “if she loses we riot” pick, and well, she did not lose. Her case is an interesting one as while Sanada’s character can continue on in greenlit future seasons, her character won’t, given that (spoilers) her death was the entire lynchpin event of season 1.

Of course, you will almost never will best actor, actress and directing without that leading to a Best Drama win, and now with Succession permanently out of the picture, the floor was clear for Shogun to take that as well. It was just hard to see much worthy competition there on that level outside of Slow Horses, but also The Crown may have been given the win as a “sendoff” win, but it wasn’t even an especially great final season. Shogun, meanwhile, was excellent start to finish, so I’m glad to see it win here.

Shogun already beat Game of Thrones record which was 12 Emmy wins across both the Creative and Primetime awards, as it had 14 by the end of the Creatives before the Primetime show tonight even started. Now, it has 18 out of 25 nominations total, and that is going to be tough for any other series to beat for a very, very long time. Here is the final list of all the Emmys Shogun won between both shows.

  1. Best Drama
  2. Best Actress in a Drama Series – Anna Sawai
  3. Best Actor in a Drama Series – Hiroyuki Sanada
  4. Best Directing for a Drama Series – Frederick E.O. Toye
  5. Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Néstor Carbonell)
  6. Best Sound Mixing
  7. Best Sound Editing
  8. Best Period Costumes
  9. Best Production Design
  10. Best Main Title Design
  11. Best Special Visual Effects
  12. Best Period/Fantasy Makeup
  13. Best Prosthetic Makeup
  14. Best Stunt Performance
  15. Best Casting for a Drama Series
  16. Best Period/Fantasy Hairstyling
  17. Best Picture Editing
  18. Best Cinematography

Exceptional series. I’m not sure it should come back for season 2, but hey, I’ll be watching.
