Samsung’s unexpected new device line, the Galaxy S25 Edge, could launch earlier than expected.
Tech reporter Max Jambor posted on X that Samsung will release the Galaxy S25 Edge in Q2, which means an April, May, or June launch. The device will almost certainly land this year and more than likely very soon.
Samsung is unlikely to launch a new handset too close to when the Galaxy S26 releases next January, or the next round of foldable phones in the summer. A spring release gives the device enough time to breathe before other Samsung phones take the limelight.
There’s also the fact that Apple is about to release its iPhone SE 4, while Google’s Pixel 9a could land in May if we go by the 8a’s launch date.
Another clue is the device’s addition to the GSMA IMEI database in November, which was discovered by Smartprix. The site points out that Samsung devices are added to the database six months before they’re released, which suggests a May date.
What is the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge?
What type of phone will the Galaxy S25 Edge be? A potential May release suggests a mid-range, affordable, Galaxy handset that is meant to compete with the new iPhone SE and Google Pixel 9a.
The dual-camera setup, instead of the three camera sensors on the Galaxy S25, backs that up. The problem is that Samsung already has a semi-budget device line that uses the Galaxy S moniker: the Galaxy S24 FE. The next FE device will land this fall.
What I think is more likely is that the Edge is being floated as a potential replacement for a handset in the main Galaxy S line. Samsung has done this before. When the company released the first Edge model back in 2015 (a phone with a curved display), it was introduced as a third model alongside the base Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Plus.
The following year the plus model was replaced by the Galaxy S7 Edge. It happened with the Note line, too, which was ultimately replaced by Galaxy S Ultra phones. The new Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge could be a hint that the Korean company plans to dramatically slim down its main Galaxy S line for future releases.
