One of Netflix’s biggest sleeper hits is Sweet Magnolias, the drama that has just aired its fourth season as of last week, and it took up the #1 spot on the top 10 list for a while. Now, it’s been dethroned by not one but two shows, one that’s expected, one that isn’t.
The expected show is WWE Monday Night RAW, and I am almost wondering if I should exclude this from my list coverage at this point, given that it is apparently going to be #1 every Monday for the foreseeable future, due to WWE and Netflix’s combined reach.
But at #2 is a true story documentary Surviving Black Hawk Down, which covers the real-life events that inspired that movie. It’s just a three part series that is more or less the length of a movie, so people are likely to get through it pretty quickly.
Moving down the list is The Åre Murders, the Swedish crime drama that I thought started out strong but…ultimately faded, with two cases jammed into just five episodes at about 90 total minutes for each one. It was a weird structure, and I didn’t find it all that compelling in the end.
#5 is a show that I just wrote about, Apple Cider Vinegar, the story of an influencer who faked brain cancer to get a following and build a brand. I believe that its star, Kaitlyn Dever, will absolutely get an Emmy nomination, if not win, due to her performance here, and even though the concept is revolting, it’s a must-watch for her alone.
I continue to be concerned about The Recruit which just keeps tumbling down the list, now at #8, and it never got above #3 in the US. Not ideal for a show trying to break past Netflix’s infamous two season-then-canceled run, and I do wonder if it’s going to survive. Maybe it’s doing better than I’m giving it credit for.
It seems likely that WWE RAW is going to do this every Monday, albeit we are now on the road to Wrestlemania, so things are only going to escalate from here for the foreseeable future. While RAW is on Netflix now, big events like Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania remain on PPV, and you won’t get them through a subscription here, which I’m sure a few fans may be disappointed by.
