The Best Horror Movie Of 2026 Has A 99% Rotten Tomatoes Score, Beating ‘Obsession’

The Best Horror Movie Of 2026 Has A 99% Rotten Tomatoes Score, Beating ‘Obsession’

We’re about two-thirds of the way through 2026, and while we have some truly epic horror successes behind us, namely Obsession and Backrooms, now we can add another movie to that list.

No, I would not expect Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma to go crazy at the box office. It’s starting with a limited release and going wider from there. That’s also…quite a title. But with over 100 reviews in, it is the best-scored horror movie on Rotten Tomatoes in 2026 by a solid margin. And that’s with just a single negative review in, which only recently knocked it down from 100%. Here is the list of what it’s above this year on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma – 99% critic score
  • Obsession – 94% critic score
  • Send Help – 93% critic score
  • Leviticus – 92% critic score
  • 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – 91% critic score
  • Hokum – 88% critic score
  • We Bury the Dead – 88% critic score
  • Backrooms – 87% critic score
  • Primate – 78% critic score
  • Undertone – 74% critic score
  • Forbidden Fruits – 74% critic score
  • Ready or Not 2: Here I Come – 73% critic score
  • Evil Dead Burn – 71% critic score
  • Faces of Death – 69% critic score
  • They Will Kill You – 65% critic score
  • Whistle – 63% critic score

And from there, the movies start to trend into “rotten” territory, though some viewers may like them regardless. Iron Lung, for instance, has an 89% audience score to its 59% critic score.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma stars Hannah Einbinder, veteran of the Emmy-darling Hacks series opposite Jean Smart. Her co-star here is Gillian Anderson, of course of X-Files fame, but also a star in Sex Education and Hannibal. She recently starred in The Abandons, a Netflix Western. Camp Miasma is directed by Jane Schoenbrun, who did I Saw the TV Glow.

What exactly is this odd-sounding movie? Here’s the synopsis:

“After years of slapdash sequels and waning fandom, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise is handed over to an enthusiastic young director (Hannah Einbinder, Hacks) for resurrection. But when she visits the original movie’s star (Gillian Anderson, The X-Files), a now-reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium.”

So, it’s a meta-project addressing horror films while itself being a horror film, paying tribute to the slashers of old. And it does it extremely well, according to almost all the reviews. Here are a few:

  • New York Times – “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is designed to knock the viewer off kilter with a gasp and a chuckle. There’s an exuberance to letting yourself go and enjoying the mess that lives inside.”
  • Bloody Disgusting – “Fantasy and reality blur in breathtaking, whimsical, and jubilant ways in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, using slasher film theory as the launchpad for a dazzling sexual awakening allegory.”

Right now, the film has expanded past its festival origins to play in New York and LA, but it will grow past that. I think you’re going to need to see the trailer for this one:

Yeah, so that’s…something. A fantastic something, if critics are to be believed. Hopefully it will come near you soon or hit streaming shortly.
